Should AVB start with Ade and Erik?

Posted on October 23, 2013 by Scraggs

A Tottenham win tomorrow in the Europa League against Sheriff will virtually guarantee progression from the group as winners, doing so so early will allow AVB the benefit of being able to protect his squad until the knockout stages begin next year. Many argue that the West Ham defeat was largely based upon the fact that the squad had faced an arduous journey to Russia and back in the few days befpre, whilst this might have had some bearing on the matter it is also true that Tottenham now possess a squad of such size and quality that without regular games it would be difficult for them to retain match fitness let alone keep them all relatively happy. It is a bit of a catch 22 situation but if the aim of the club is to play regularly in the Champions League then it seems that AVB is following the pattern of all the big clubs, get the job done early and then use the squad and blood a few youngsters before the knockout stage. If Tottenham have pretensions of stepping up to join the elite then we can no longer use as an excuse European fixtures as a reason for failure in the league.

If results are favourable tomorrow progression is job done and the remaining three games will give AVB the opportunity to experiment a little, to hopefully finish the job tomorrow Tottenham cannot fail to put out a really strong team, players are getting back to fitness and two or three played last Sunday who might have been expected to have only been involved in tomorrows game, the situation has changed a little as a result of the international break and that defeat just prior, next Sunday and again on Wednesday the club face Hull in the league and then the Capital One Cup at White Hart Lane, both matches will almost certainly mean playing against a packed defense and a team aiming to counter-attack. So who does AVB start with tomorrow? Capoue, Rose and Kaboul are expected to recover from injury at some point this week and provided the players come through unscathed tomorrow will mean that AVB will have his full complement of players to choose from for the very first time.

There are four players who stand out for me as certainties for tomorrow, they all need games and the opportunity to establish themselves after a difficult period at the club due in the main to injury or simply settling in, Aaron Lennon has been injured since the first game of the season and after a brief appearance against Villa now needs to play some games, the same can be said of Nacer Chadli who has had a bit of a stop start period since signing, he is another we have high hopes for and is probably ready to step in if Sigurdsson fails to produce performances at any time. Probably the two players that need to desperately get a full game under their belt are Emanuel Adebayor and Erik Lamela, both are incredibly talented and might just bring out the best in each other.

Adebayor as we know can appear to be disinterested but I defy anyone to deny that his work ethic for the team is anything other than immense, he offers something totally different to Soldado and Defoe and whilst Soldado can and probably will get the twenty odd goals we need, Defoe and Adebayor might only promise ten to fifteen at most, with that in mind Adebayor actually offers far more to the team than Defoe with his  aerial and hold up abilities being far superior.

Erik Lamela has only made brief appearances in the team so far, he has suffered because of the immense performances of Andros Townsend and yet every Tottenham fan is excited by his potential and glimpses of the special talent he clearly possess, choose the right team tomorrow and perhaps Lamela should be given that free role behind the striker that Gareth Bale enjoyed with such success last season, he knows the position, he has excelled in the position for Roma and River Plate and that is the position that was pinpointed for him by Roma to succeed Totti and even by Argentina who know a thing about such players in that position, Messi and Maradonna spring to mind, even our own Ossie Ardilles has called it.

Assuming that AVB rests most of the team from the Villa game this is the team we believe that Tottenham might start with tomorrow and in all honesty it is an extremely exciting prospect. There are other combinations that excite one being the central defensive combination of Chiriches and Vertonghen, both very technical and with a penchant for getting forward to support attacks, the other is last seasons great success story until injury broke them up, Sandro and Dembele, until the serious injury to Sandro they were hailed as the most potent midfield double act in the country. When you think that should this team be chosen or even if it were Defoe for Adebayor it would have involved eight changes from the Villa game, with Eriksen, Rose, Kane, Kaboul and Capoue involved in neither Tottenham can and should no longer be considered as outsiders for any competion they enter and that could yet include a decent title challenge.

    That could be an incredible team and of course Lamela could play on right and Eriksen could come in behind the forward. This really is becoming an impressive squad and with the likelihood of another leftback to come in January this could become an epic season for us.

  2. mick says:

    It would be nice to get the job over and done with early especially with some tough fixtures coming up after Hull. Looks like Arsenal will be joining the competition in the new year, after last nights defeat they probably have to beat one of Dortmund or Napoli away to get through, lose both and it’s Thursday night football after xmas.

    • Caleb says:

      As much as I agree with you in the terms that it will now be tough to get out of the group. We have a home match with marseille which you would say is three points. That will give us 9 points. Then if we can draw or beat Napoli or dortmund away it would most probably see us take second place in the group

      • mick says:

        need some sort of result away, if it’s a draw it will probably depend on head to head and the clean sheet and 2 goals against Napoli might be crucial, if it’s a draw with the germans then yesterdays result will haunt you. agreed it not impossible because it is your own hands but the odds are now probably in favour of the other two at the moment.

        • Caleb says:

          I’d agree with that. It all depends on the away result and if we go into the match like we have in our last away games we should be able to pick up a point and maybe get a lucky win in one of them. Last night was disappointing to lose I could have coped with a draw

  3. fordo says:

    what happened to ericki htough he was our ozil

  4. Eric says:

    M sick of Avb taking important players on unnecessary away europa games after which we drop like season n so far this season too.Call me a pessimist but his obsession may end up costing a Cl place.Remember last season we missed by a single point which could have easily be gained had we not lost that many points after a europa games.Important players should play at imp stages cause I truly believe we should aim cup success with our squad but he is being childish for me

    • craig says:

      I know where your coming from but of we believe we are a champions leahue team and we do.then we have to play strong lineups in europe avb always makes several changes in the cup competitions which he wnt be able to do next year when we hope to be CL and playing tues. And wed.

  5. Alee says:

    IF Adeybayor gets a chance to play then I’d love a team of:
    Friedel;
    Naughton, Kaboul, Chireches, Fryers;
    Sandro/Capoui;
    Lamela, Adeybayor, Eriksen, Chadli;
    Defoe/Kane;

    It’ll never happen though!

  6. Eric says:

    Avb obsession with the europa league may be downfall just like last year.Hope m proved wrong

  7. Jide says:

    Eric, it’s refreshing to have some support on this issue. I have been saying this that we do not need our first team players in the Europa league. We have a big squad to cope and leave the main players for our bread and butter, the league. I will however reluctantly accept the first squad playing tomorrow apart from Sandro. The Beast is so important to us that he must be wrapped up in cotton wool.

    Mick, I am not at all concerned about the Woolwich gooners or what they do. As I said before, I am just so happy that the likes of macgooner, Pudoh will be quiet for a few days! Hiding after their loss last night! Ha ha!

    • Eric says:

      The group teams are of championship which warrants that players who don’t play next Pl game don’t travel away n reserves/rookies make the branch.Also it doesn’t matter whether we go through with 12 or 18 points so y someone like rose vertonghen play these games is beyond me.I can’t bear the agony once again,last season n west ham game were enough for me
