Should Mario Gomez of Bayern be a Tottenham target?

Posted on May 30, 2013 by Scraggs

There has been much talk that Bayern Munich are about to complete the signing of Lewandowski from their nearest competitors Borussia Dortmund and should they be successful Mario Gomez will fall further down the pecking order. Just last summer Bayern purchased Mario Mandzukic and he has become the teams preferred option up front even starting the Champions League final ahead of Gomez.

Obviously we are aware that the new coach Pep Guardiola is due to take over this coming season and he will have a different take on players and might prefer Gomez, however if Bayern are actually trying to pull off a deal for Lewandowski it is at the behest of the new coach and does not augur well for the current forwards.

We know that Guardiola has a liking for a sole forward with a very fluid midfield with one or more able to operate in an advanced position, there have been times when his Barcelona team actually played with six midfielders as David Villa apart the old style centre forward did not exist for them. If he goes to Bayern with a similar mindset and Lewandowski joins there will be few opportunities for the likes of Mario Gomez whose record deserves better than being a third choice striker.

Gomez has career statistics of 219 goals in 372 outings, some of these will have been from the bench and so those statistics are even more impressive. with 37 goals in 62 in Europe this is a seriously good striker who deserves to be considered by any team needing goals.

Tottenham have a decent track record when buying German players with Stefan Freund and that other forward Jurgen Klinsmann remembered fondly, both contributed immensely to the club in their time with them. Tottenham have turned to Freund to become assistant to AVB and already we can see his enthusiasm shining through once more, Lewis Holtby has recently joined and is another that bubbles and gives everything to the team.

Gomez seems to have been around forever but is still only 27yrs old and might just be what we are looking for, he will be reasonably costly but not silly money and his goalscoring record stands up well against any of the best strikers around.

Tottenham are being linked with just about every forward across the globe, some will be wishful thinking, some will just not be good enough and some will prefer another challenge but there will be a forward or two out there desperate to join Tottenham and the challenge coming up next season and Gomez might be one of them.
