Soldado will comfortably replace Bale goals.

Posted on August 26, 2013 by Tony

After just three games for his new club Roberto Soldado already has four goals to his name in a Tottenham shirt all in competitive fixtures, he has only trained with his new teammates for a matter of a couple of weeks and is already four goals ahead of Bale at the same stage of last season. Some will point to the fact that half have come from penalties but Gareth Bale has a record of one taken and one missed and he also had the benefit of taking every free kick even remotely within range last year.

Probably because Tottenham missed out on the signing of Willian all the focus seems to be on a perceived lack of creative ability some even suggesting that the club still miss Modric and his creative genius, I am not going to pretend that he was not fantastic for Tottenham but 26 assists in 159 games does not even compare with Aaron Lennon who managed 36 assists in the same period but slightly fewer games, that does not suggest such a huge miss and we now know that AVB found a way to improve the team. We know that Harry is fond of telling everybody who will listen that Modric often assisted the assist but truth is he was a master of retaining and redistributing the ball, not unlike Moussa Dembele who has similar stats but is better defensively.

It will be strange not to see Tottenham lineup with Bale but they have already moved on and I would suggest that most supporters are not shedding a tear or fearing the worst, if anything the squad and team looks to be even stronger, I would suggest a team in the true sense and not ten players and what has turned out to be a prima donna.

Tottenham now have two pure defensive midfielders in Sandro and Capoue and both are very impressive in what they do, Paulinho and Dembele both provide defensive ability but are also box to box players, at the moment Paulinho seems the type that will add lots of goals and it will be a massive surprise if he fails to get into double figures. Sigurdsson, Holtby and Carroll also provide workrate and the ability to open up defences.

Wing play is the province of Lennon, Chadli and Townsend and with Lamela allegedly on his way to add even more quality there is much to look forward to. Much of what I read is quite negative at the moment citing that Tottenham lack creative ability and the explosive Bale to save them,  think back to this time last season or worse still the season before, last year a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle followed by a couple of 1-1 draws to the powerhouses of Norwich and WBA, three goals and none for Bale the great hope.

Give me clean sheets and wins anyday, the free flowing and creative side will come once all the players have settled in and any new players arrive.

We do need more goals.. But I believe it will start flowing once the team starts to click together.. Townsend is looking good and he’s still so young.. Chadli has been impressive so far too.. If we do sign Lamela, I guess he will sit into the so called ‘creative’ slot with Chadli Lennon and townsend patrolling the wing.. With or without Bale, the team still look strong enough to challenge the likes of The 2 Manchester clubs, Chelsea arsenal..

Paulinho had four good chances last night and on another day a couple would go in. It took a couple of months before the team gelled last year so to be winning so soon is impressive, they probably won’t be truly firing for a month or so yet.
