Spurs player ratings at United.

Posted on January 02, 2014 by Eddie S

Before we get going let me first say that I have been won over to some extent by Tim Sherwood and his coaching team, he has quickly adapted and changed things following his first couple of games when he chose teams that were far too soft centred and gave precious little protection to the back four. It would now seem that the likes of Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro and Capoue will all at some point be crucial to his team selection and allow the flair and touch players to do their stuff in more advanced areas. There is still much to do and more difficult encounters to overcome but it will be interesting to see what tactical adjustments he makes in various situations and to cater for different opposition setups.

On now to player performances;

Hugo Lloris- He is what he is, he plays his game on the edge, there is no other keeper quite like him as he advances quickly to snuff out danger. Still manages to cause  moments of concern but he was again very influential and made a massive contribution to the win. He took control a number of times and collected balls into the box, choosing to catch rather than punch, which was encouraging.7.

Kyle Walker- Is there a better right back in the country right now? Probably not, he was up against United’s teenage wonder kid in the first half and managed to snuff out most of the danger he presented, eventually Moyes switched him to the other flank in an attempt to bring him into the game. Along with Lennon a great pairing on the right. 7.5

Michael Dawson- His lack of pace will always mean that he will have moments when he looks a weak link but he gives his all and put’s himself in the firing line every time he pulls on the shirt. There were a few heart stopping moments in the opening ten minutes and for the United goal when he and his partner were caught flat footed, apart from that when our backs were against the wall in the final quarter he stood firm. 7.

Vlad Chiriches- For some he was our man of the match and it was certainly one of his best performances for the club, strong in the air with that ability to intercept the ball and break out of defence he promises much, much more for the future. Caught out for Wellbeck’s goal  but otherwise immense. 7.5

Danny Rose- Not one of his best performances but still good to see him back. Always willing to get forward there will be better days to come, but without the protection afforded by a player ahead of him more attuned to his defensive duties Rose will have to pick his moments carefully to break forward. 6.

Aaron Lennon- Finally fit he put in a great performance and was considered by many to be our most impressive performer on the day. Worked hard for the team offensively and defensively and as usual terrified Evra, always a threat and had a couple of good opportunities to put his name on the scoresheet while he set up Eriksen for the second goal and put Soldado in for what could have been a second first half goal. A late push for a place in England’s World Cup squad could be to Tottenham’s benefit. 8.MOTM.

Etienne Capoue- Crucial to the performance after a scrappy first ten minutes of misplaced passes, he recovered and was a major influence on the game alongside everyone’s favourite sidekick Dembele. surprised to see him leave the field in all honesty as it coincided with United’s final charge and might just have allowed them back into the game. 7

Moussa Dembele- He has the odd sloppy game but what a season he is having, absolutely vital to Tottenham and he must be one of the most unique players in Europe. Dembele has an enormous appetite for work, defensively sound, goes past players with consummate ease meaning he breaks midfield lines and takes the game to the opposition. Ten more goals a season and he would be on the shopping list of all the best clubs and he probably still has his best ahead of him. 7.5

Christian Eriksen-  A creative force now finding himself getting into goalscoring positions and settling into his surroundings. Probably not totally cut out for a position on the left but given the opportunity to float when the situation arises as he did when setting up the first goal. Playing him on the left is a little reminiscent of a certain Harry Redknapp playing  Luka Modric there during his first year. Was calling for his replacement by a more defensive left midfielder when he scored his goal, one up for Sherwood. 7.

Roberto Soldado- He got himself into one great goalscoring position from a Lennon break but there is far more to his game in this new Tottenham set up. His link up play and inventive passing sets up opportunities for others, a great ball split United and set up Lennon for what should have been the opening goal while he played Eriksen in to set up Adebayor for his goal. works hard, links play and covers when the need arises, the goals will come. 7.

Emmanuel Adebayor- Another one of those massive performances which leads Sherwood to describe him as unplayable when in the mood. For an hour United could not control him and he took his goal with aplomb calmly nodding into the corner. Always picking up the ball in deep positions he then drove at United’s defence, he was the fifth man in midfield as either he or Soldado dropped deep to match up to United. 8

An encouraging performance and a great result even though this is no longer the Manchester United of old.

I think the real strength behind Tim’s 442 over AVB’s 4231 is that the responsibilities between Midfield defense and attack are much less regimented. There is more tactical freedom for the likes of Dembele and Eriksen to express themselves offensively whilst no one feels it isn’t their job to get back and defend at times like at Man U yesterday.

Another major reason for our current good form though is Adeybayor. When he is up for it, that boy is absolute world class and really hope he and Eriksen and Soldado can build up a real understanding with eachother.

The real test for Tim will be if he can get results without Adey on the pitch. Speaking of which, what state is Adey in after getting injured?

    • Tony says:

As well as that it’s the pace of attacks although to be fairwe were no slouches under AVB either last year or this. Perhaps it is because teams think they can take advantage of our 4 man midfield that they are almost goaded into attacking us and then we strike. The 2 forwards definitely do the work to bolster the midfield. If he doesn’t regain fitness in time for Saturday he might try to play either Eriksen or Lamela close to Soldado or both .

  2. Alee says:

As for the players, agree with most of what you said. Dawson is a stalwart. More than happy to have him at the club but I’d like a future where our first choice CD pairing was Vertongen and Chireches and then Dawson and a new defender to cover Vertongen’s position. Kaboul probably needs to go because he seems injury prone.

I think Rose will come good with a sustained period of week-in, week-out play.

It says a lot about Bale’s class that he overshadowed Lennon because Lennon himself is a fantastic little winger who would be a real asset to most clubs in Europe.

Agree, it did seem odd that Capoui was taken off for Bentaleb. Can only have been due to fitness issues surely.

I was a little disappointed with Cristian Eriksen as I feel we really need him to be on the ball more. Alas though, he is only 21, still getting used to the PL and has big boots to fill because perhaps we Spurs fans are expecting a bit of Modric and Van der Vaart in his play.

    • Admin says:

Think Eriksen still has lots more to offer but he doesn’t provide the security the fullback needs and as supplied by Lennon on the other flank and does not have blinding pace. Still think he is more suited to a five in centre of midfield, still a very intelligent player who will only get better.
