Tottenham’s performance on Sunday could hardly be described as exciting, flowing, confident or convincing but most importantly it was a winning performance and the challenge for a Champions League place goes on. Most would agree that the three of Chelsea, Arsenal and City are safe in the race for a top four position, though Harry Redknapp’s suggestion that Arsenal might yet falter might not be so far fetched judging from their performance this weekend, if accurate then the final spot would seem to be between ourselves, Liverpool, Everton and United.

Based on this weekends performances the table probably doesn’t lie at the moment, Liverpool are the form team, scoring goals with ease and almost unbeatable at home though their away form continues to let them down, Everton are strong, play good football but as in past seasons their squad remains short on numbers despite numerous loans, United are currently the real outsiders of the bunch though they have so many top players used to success they cannot be dismissed. Then there is Tottenham, not playing well but with strong squad growing bigger week by week as players recover from injury, other than the City game the luck has generally been with us as the quality and determination of the players seem to find a way to get the job done.

This fantastic save from Lloris prevented Everton from taking the lead.

This fantastic save from Lloris prevented Everton from taking the lead.

Up against a very good determined Everton most fans were pleased to see Sherwood start with a five man midfield, even so for fifteen minutes or so Everton overwhelmed us and could easily have taken an unassailable lead but for the heroics of Hugo Lloris who was the true MOTM in my opinion, though Adebayor and possibly Dembele were close behind, without the crucial involvement of Lloris so early on the first shot on target from a total of just two would have been irrelevant.

As a spectator this was not a game to enjoy, Tottenham were sloppy at times and failed to string many meaningful moves together, it appeared that Lennon was asked to play narrow rather than do what he does best wide on the right and with Eriksen wasted on the left and unable to cope with the defensive side of the game, both fullbacks were exposed up against the two best offensive fullbacks around at the moment. The three central midfielders still contained neither a true playmaker nor a defensive midfielder, surely one or the other should be a must depending upon the opposition of the day, no defensive midfielder leaves our central defensive pairing exposed without the more pacy Kaboul in place of Dawson and asking Eriksen to provide openings floating about from the left leaves us vulnerable down the left.

It strikes me and many other supporters that we are getting results despite Sherwood and his team choices and tactics, he has been an extremely lucky coach, and we have not had one of those for many a season, that might seem harsh as he has managed to tweak things at half time on a number of occasions bringing good results, yet in general the team have started slowly in almost every game and performances have been little better than average and far from exciting, there has certainly been very little of the exciting flowing football in the Tottenham way we were promised, a few more goals, a far better strike rate but  fewer attempts on goal and very few dominating performances.

Despite the moans and groans the points haul is impressive and at an average 2.2 points per fixture which only Chelsea and City have fractionally beaten, it is better than Liverpool the catalyst for his appointment and the equal of Wenger and Arsenal.

Tottenham have the best away record in the league and now travel to Newcastle and Norwich hoping to keep that record intact, a tall order as Newcastle has not been a happy hunting ground in recent times and Norwich are now playing as well as they have done all season, let’s hop “Lucky Tim” comes through.
