Spurs review and player ratings.

Let’s be totally honest things could have got a whole lot worse and the headlines could so easily have been screaming once again for AVB’s head but for a few outstanding contributions last night, even so it could have easily been different and Tottenham might have found themselves on easy street by half time but for some poor finishing, near misses and good keeping. AVB made a few changes and used his squad once again, losing Dembele to injury on the day was a bitter blow and most were surprised that Capoue started in his place, it didn’t really work and AVB made the change at halftime as much to protect him from a second booking and red card as to change the game.

This wasn’t a convincing performance by any stretch of the imagination but some credit for that has to go to Fulham and their new coach, a team in trouble gave their all and were a constant threat and their impact and effort should be acknowledged:-

LlorisРProbably his busiest ninety minutes since he joined the club and a man of the match performance, no chance with the goal but was in the right place to prevent Fulham scoring a late equaliser. 8 MOTM

Walker-Seemed to get caught out too far forward early on but as usual his pace and strength got him out of trouble and he grew into the game. Created six chances on the night and had a strong game , quickly over the mistake for Uniteds first equaliser on Sunday.7

DawsonРA decent performance but  another glaring error leading to a goal and immense pressure on the team, Berbatov found one of his best performances in recent weeks and caused problems throughout. Dawson is in the midst of a blip in performance levels although he never hides and will no doubt find a way through.6

Chiriches– Another who hopefully learned from facing Berbatov, a good performance enhanced by that wonder strike, as good a half volley as you will see and it skimmed across the surface and left the Fulham keeper rooted to the spot.Learning more with every outing and looks set for a regular spot soon.7

Vertonghen– A converted centre half and last night he looked it as he failed to get into the opposition half or overlap at any stage. He is the best centre half at the club and the sooner he returns to his rightful position the better. Always gives of his best and the best alternative to Rose until his return.6.

Lennon– Another good performance from Lennon and plenty of threatening moments without finding the final pass to open up the opposition. Still finding his fitness and there is probably more to come from him, a little sloppy with his passing at times which put Walker under pressure.6.

Paulinho-Many will be pointing to the awful miss in the first half and a couple of other missed opportunities but it was still a decent performance from him. He continues to get into a position to score and might have helped himself to a hatrick with a little more luck and cool finishing. Never hides and promises to deliver soon as he always makes the runs and finds the space in the oppositions area.7.

Sandro– As always a solid performance and all action and nearly added another goal to his portfolio. AVB brought him off in an effort to inject more forward momentum when the team needed a goal. Probably needed a rest as he will be crucial to the weekends game at Sunderland.7.

Capoue– Not back to full fitness and needs to find his sharpness, managed to get forward and get a shot or two away. Withdrawn at halftime as much to protect him following his early booking as to change tactically.5.

Lamela– Slow start but then clicked into action and came close on a couple of occasions. Tottenham have a player creeping closer to settling but clearly not quite there and in need of games. Some encouraging signs.6.

DefoeРAn early effort on target a back heel and little else and another opportunity lost to make the position his own. Clearly the lack of goals from Soldado or any other lone striker is not the fault of the striker alone but a team issue. More hard work in training and blending as a team still needed. 6.

Subs. Holtby-Townsend and Chadli– all contributed to changing the game and there is little more to say about Holtby’s winner other than “unstoppable”

More work needed but as the team add more points to their total confidence will return and pressure will ease and those issues are just as important.
