Spurs v Chelsea preview and team prediction.

Posted on September 26, 2013 by Eddie S

Another London derby, this time at White Hart Lane, and an opportunity to lay down a marker to every team in the Premiership that Spurs are level at the top of the table on merit. With the visit of Chelsea the players will give themselves and their supporters the chance to erase the result of the last London derby from their immediate memory, a positive result against Chelsea will certainly do them the world of good and further enhance their belief that a special season might lie ahead.

To add spice to the occasion Jose Mourinho will roll up again after nearly six years away, only this time one of his staff from that period will be in the home dugout directing operations for Spurs, one of his old team Andre Villas-Boas, the coach who followed his route through from Porto, where he enjoyed massive success, to Chelsea where he didn’t, is now leading the Spurs charge in a season that we hope will ultimately end in glory.

Fortunately for Tottenham some Chelsea players gave AVB a hard time during his short tenure with them, they were not prepared to follow his instructions and he has also admitted that he had problems dealing with some of them. That chapter is now over and there is a totally different feelgood factor around Spurs since he was appointed and the players seem to trust him implicitly.

Chelsea and Mourinho seem to be the ones with all the problems at the moment yet they are just two points behind, things are clearly not as bad as the picture being painted and whatever team they put out must be respected. Sadly they have lost the services of one of their expensive new recruits Van Ginkel, he has been ruled out for the season after picking up a serious knee injury after just seven minutes of the Capital Cup fixture on Tuesday and his dream of appearing for his country in Brazil unfortunately goes with it. Ramires, one of their key players also picked up an injury in the same game and is a big doubt for Saturday.

We are not even going to try to second guess Mourinho’s team selection but it would be no surprise if he threw in Mata, Willian and Torres hoping to kickstart their season by choosing them for what is a huge game for both teams.

AVB has an equally difficult task choosing his team for this game for far different reasons, with eight wins in nine games and having made several changes in each fixture played over the past ten days he has masses of options and a huge number of players performing well. Does he go with the extra defensive strength of Sandro? the sharp and on form Defoe? Holtby over Eriksen as both are providing the chances others around them thrive upon? Lamela or Townsend? Lamela producing that quality and final pass from the right or Townsend, all pace, power and with more shots on goal than any other player in the league.

After a very crowded schedule of late and only about to play the sixth game of the league season, this is the team that we believe he will choose subject to any fitness issues. As far as we are aware only Danny Rose is a doubt, it was initially stated that he would be available for this weekend and there is no need to doubt it remains so. Even choosing the players for the bench is about to become harder as within a couple of weeks Capoue, Lennon and Kaboul will also have recovered and will throw their names into the hat.

It’s going to be good to see AVB own Mourinho.

  2. yidarmy says:

When you look at the Chelsea team last year it is likely 1 or 2 changes at most. Spurs lost Dembele and Bale just before KO and will have at least five better players this week. Have got a good feeling about this.

  3. Eric says:

Lamela Rose n Sandro should start

    • Tony says:

I do like Lamela everything he does is classy and productive , he makes things happen, but I would start with Townsend to rip cole apart and then bring Lamela on to rub it in. Sandro for me is the best destructive force in the country, the makalale of the great chelsea team, just don’t think he will be needed for this till later in game, Paulinho and Dembele should run them ragged pull them all over the place. chelsea will have to play mikel and wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t play essien as well.

Hate to admit it but I see tottenham getting the better of chelsea would love a draw do ha anyway best of luck

    • Tony says:

thanks, would settle for draw but fancy our chances and you and us need to keep chavs and united as far behind as possible for as long as possible.

  5. macgooner says:

Ya would love to see arsenal an spurs fighting for the title an the rest for top four probly wishfull thinking but as you say we have to keep the other teams behind us for as long as possible draw or spurs to win just to heap pressure on mourinho. Townsend is playing good stuff these days thought when ye played us he looked the most dangerous

  6. mick says:

clean sheet is not vital although if they score first mourinho will park the bus.
