Still room for Adebayor and Dempsey at Tottenham.

Posted on May 23, 2013 by Guest Writer

There seems to be a consensus of opinion that Tottenham will look to offload as many as eight players this summer, amongst the eight mentioned Adebayor and Dempsey seem high up the list. Whilst Adebayor might be a target for someone like Monaco or possibly a wealthy Russian club who might be able to offer him a fortune to sign for them, my guess is that he remains an important part of AVB’s plans, of course he will be expected to score more often than he managed to this past season, a return similar to his loan period would make a huge difference. Goals apart Adebayor seemed to me to be a team player and instrumental in creating openings for the Gareth Bale show, his workrate and ability remains despite a poor return and clearly he showed what he was all about late in the season. Perhaps with a decent pre-season behind him Adebayor can reproduce the form we know he has on a more regular basis.

There is no suggestion here that Tottenham should not go out and buy at least one top striker as the focal point of the team with Adebayor as back up or on the bench. I do believe that one of the current strikers might be released but I am not convinced that it will be Adebayor.

Clint Dempsey has had a mixed season, never spectacular but he has an incredible workrate, is a team player and has pitched in with some important goals and assists. His goals have come against some of the best teams so he is no flat track bully and produces when it really matters, a good sign. For a first season with a team going through transition he has done quite well and is worth his place in the squad, he is the type of player that every team needs when the chips are down, prepared to battle every inch of the way to get the job done.

Assuming Tottenham bring in the few players that we all realise that they need, and with one or two of the successful loanees returning and needing to take a place in the squad, some players will have to go. Gallas is out of contract but I fear for some of our favourites like Benni, Huddlestone, Parker and Defoe as the squad is constructed to take Tottenham to the next level.

Let’s hope that purchases are made quickly for a change, that will enable AVB to assess the make up of the squad and choose his 25 players before the season starts. There will likely be a spare place heading into the final day of the transfer period which will allow Daniel Levy to try to pull off one last surprise deal to further excite supporters.

Adebayor team player with workrate and ability…..!!!! Have you been watching Spurs this season? Dempsey worth keeping, but may go, good squad player. We do need a bit of a clear out, it will be sad to see Benny and Parker go, but we must move on as a club. Thanks to those who do leave, cos I wish them well

There is a reason he is chosen before Defoe, he has always been chosen to start if fit and that is because he does lots of unselfish running and works hard to create space for the likes of Bale and Dempsey. I didn’t say he would or should remain first choice but he does have ability, that is clear from his performance during his first year when every fan wanted him. Other than that agree it is time to move on and replace some of yesterdays favourites with better replacements and they go with our best wishes.

People are rightly criticising Ade because he was only half the player from the previous season, some say that teams with aspirations to win things and qualify for the CL need better than a workhorse BUT think Danny Welbeck of Manchester United and an England regular, 39 games for United this season and just 2 goals. That makes Ade look prolific.
