Should Walker and Townsend be the England choices? 0

Posted on October 11, 2013 by Tony

England take on Montenegro tonight in what is a crucial fixture along the road to Brazil, any slip up and any one of three countries could take advantage of the slender lead England have earned, including tonight’s visitors to Wembley. After tonight it is the turn of Poland who visit on Tuesday and are another who could turn the table on it’s head. Unfortunately I have to admit that I was in the crowd all those years ago when “The Clown” so named by Brian Clough was in inspired form and was very instrumental in preventing England’s involvement in the World cup in 1974,  “Clough trod on my honour,” says Tomaszewski. “But what he said gave me extra verve and energy.” On that occasion England did not take part in the world cup in Germany and that came as a major shock to English football.

Is Andros Townsend the answer to England’s right midfield problem? 0

For what seems an eternity England have had a problem on the right side of midfield, coaches have been chopping and changing between Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson, James Milner and Theo Walcott, why even David Bentley was once heralded as the successor to David Beckham. All have had their moments when they seem sure to cement their position in the team but sadly it rarely lasts.

Is it time to start Lamela? 2

Andros Townsend has come into the Tottenham team this season and has produced some fantastic performances, he has had the edge over every fullback he has faced and played a major part in team performances, but there is a problem. Townsend has had more shots this season than any other player but has yet to score a league goal, his accuracy is not in question but it is fair to say that most efforts have been from outside the box. Considering how much possession he has had and with so much advantage over opposing defenders in five appearances and 390 minutes on the pitch he has only created 7 chances, not bad but perhaps more should be expected of him, take Aaron Lennon for example who with just a single appearance created 3 chances and each of them from the byline.

Key battle-Andros Townsend v Ashley Cole 4

With quality all over the pitch the decisive moments of today’s game will probably revolve around uneven match ups and one of those could be Andros Townsend against Ashley Cole, the young pretender v experienced pro. Over the years much of Tottenham’s limited success in this fixture has stemmed from any advantage that Aaron Lennon managed to gain from the right against Cole, pace and tricky play has often caused Cole problems and Lennon has always tended to do well, even finding time to score the winning goal on one particular occasion.

Is Andros Townsend ready to challenge for Walcott’s England spot. 2

The surprise news of the day is the call up of Andros Townsend to the full England squad after just two first team appearances to date. Roy Hodgson was at the Tottenham v Swansea match on Sunday and must have been as impressed as the rest of us with his performance. Of course he has not been chosen simply off the back of his last couple of matches but his brief appearance in a QPR shirt towards the end of last season obviously also caught his eye.

Is AndrosTownsend now ahead of Aaron Lennon? 0

Having watched the Espanyol and Crystal Palace fixtures which both featured Aaron Lennon in the starting line up it was noticeable that even though he regularly managed to do what he has always been superb at, going past his full back and reaching the by line, he was still rarely able to deliver the right pass at the crucial time, to be fair to him both games came at a time when some of the new players were not so in tune with their team mates and Lennon not aware of the movements of the new players.

‘I feel I am ready to experience football at the highest level in Europe and the opportunity to play in England is a dream,’ said the midfielder, who is set to become one of the Premier League’s brightest stars.

‘It’s a great pleasure to be linked to such a great club like Tottenham. ‘They have a reputation as one of the great clubs in England who play exciting, attacking football which suits my style.

‘I couldn’t turn them down once they made me an offer. It would be a great pleasure to play for Tottenham.’

So the authorities have acted quickly and handed Andros Townsend a 4 month ban for breaching betting regulations, even so he will remain eligible for the first fixture of the season with the ban operative from the 23rd May for one month with the remaining 3 months of the sentence suspended.

The suspended sentence will hang over him until the 1st July 2016 and he has also been hit with a fine of £18000. Tottenham’s man of the match today was-Andros Townsend. 0

QPR gave the second half a good go today and came close to pinching a point from Arsenal on a number of occasions, behind most of their good work was a certain Andros Townsend who will surely return to the fold next season and compete for a position wide on either wing,

Townsend’s skill, workrate and willingness to run at the Arsenal defence caused them a number of worrying situations and he was unlucky not to score himself, drawing a great save from their keeper.

Will Andros Townsend leave Tottenham this summer. Doubtful. 0

Following a successful loan spell with QPR during which time he has probably been one of their best two or three players in just about every game, Andros Townsend now becomes a wanted man and the latest club to target his services are Swansea who seem prepared to offer Tottenham £5m for the player.

We seem to be in the very same territory of Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton in the past who have both gone to Premiership clubs on loan and produced exceptional service. Both players were targets for other clubs but Walker has of course returned and established himself as a first team regular and whilst Naughton has not had the same success he has appeared in plenty of games.
