Pochettino’s boys spark England hopes. 0

Posted on March 27, 2016 by Scraggs

Just about every Tottenham supporter has been energised by the performance and quality produced by the squad assembled by Mauricio Pochettino this season, yet some seem to have found it necessary to suggest that most of their Premier League success has been founded on a poor domestic league and some sort of slip in standards at all of last seasons top four! Last night Roy Hodgson chose four of Tottenham’s successful performers of the season so far in his starting lineup to face the current world champions in their own back yard.

If England need a player to excite and terrify opposition defences then their man is Andros Townsend, yet again he donned the england shirt and took the fight to the opposition at every opportunity and to back him up and run past him and add his own brand of pace was Kyle Walker. Every time that they play down the right in the England team and for Tottenham then so does their understanding and ability to break down the opposition improve. With more than ten years at the top and their best years some way ahead of them England might just have the a wonderful partnership blooming.

England lifted by new generation. 3

For so long now the English media and retired professionals have led the public to believe that there was little hope for the national side, they have drummed into us all the point that that there are few players out there able to replace the ageing stars of so many other fruitless campaigns in the World Cup and European Championship. We have forever been informed that experience of Champions League football and years of top Premiership football is essential to make it in the England team and then along came Andros Townsend to ram those words down their throats. Townsend played in just twelve Premiership games for QPR last season and six for Tottenham this season so far, over the course of the past few years he has been involved at some point in just eleven Europa League games but because of injuries to Theo Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain and even Aaron Lennon and for no other reason, Roy Hodgson took a chance on including Townsend in his England squad and because of what he produced in training actually chose him for duty in two vital games, how he has been rewarded with the player producing two outstanding performances and more than that, alongside Rooney, Sturridge and Welbeck helping to transform the team ethos into a fearless attacking side.

From stand-in to star. How will Townsend react? 1

News of Andros Townsend’s inclusion in the England team on Friday probably didn’t register too highly with most supporters across the country, Tottenham supporters would have been interested in seeing whether he could take his club form into England duty, while Arsenal supporters and many England fans would have been cursing the luck of Theo Walcott and fearing that recent form might dissipate in his absence. Fast forward to today’s crucial final fixture of this World Cup campaign, we hope, and Townsend is the name on everyone’s lips and a player upon which massive hope rests.

When will these Defoe fears disappear? 5

Again the same articles continue to be flogged regarding Jermain Defoe’s fears that he will not be chosen for England duty or be chosen to travel to next years World Cup unless he is playing regular Premier League football for his club. With seven goals in just four starts in Europe and the cups he is continuing to make his mark and while he is doing that he will continue to be chosen for an England team lacking a striker like him. To be perfectly honest can england afford not to take Defoe who probably has the best striking record of any other current England player, boasting 19 goals in 54 appearances, most of them as a substitute.

Is Andros Townsend ready to challenge for Walcott’s England spot. 2

The surprise news of the day is the call up of Andros Townsend to the full England squad after just two first team appearances to date. Roy Hodgson was at the Tottenham v Swansea match on Sunday and must have been as impressed as the rest of us with his performance. Of course he has not been chosen simply off the back of his last couple of matches but his brief appearance in a QPR shirt towards the end of last season obviously also caught his eye.
