Central defence in safe hands with Pochettino. 0

Posted on July 25, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

Coaches, goalkeepers, defenders and teams love to keep clean sheets, as a central defender of some repute our own coach Mauricio Pochettino will be anxious to shore up what was a porous defence as Tottenham lost heavily to teams in the top three throughout last season. As an ex central defender he will know that the set up of the team is as vital as having the right players in place and that will mean the return of the defensive midfield anchor, maybe even two on occasions.

Though important to have a secure defensive set up winning games is even more important, as we have seen in the opening two friendlies a high line, pressing and plenty of play in and around the oppositions penalty box is essential to his plans. Though five goals have been conceded during the two games it should be taken into context, the players have only just returned to training and many of the lineups are experimental designed to give every touring player pitch time and to aid conditioning and match fitness.

Let’s firstly clear one thing up, when Harry Kane burst into the box with the score at 2-1 in favour of Tottenham it was a penalty and not one of three officials close to the event had the guts or the conviction to reward Tottenham with the opportunity to at least to take the game into extra time. What had for most Tottenham supporters had been an excercise in damage limitation actually turned into a very acceptable performance from the entire team and though it is difficult and unfair to pick out individuals special credit must go to Sandro (the recipient of the award for worst Brazilian to appear in the Premiership from the esteemed journalist Adrian Durham) and Zeki Fryers who allowed very few opportunities to the opposition lauded last week as a class apart, Nabil Bentaleb, a player much maligned by us at JTN but responsible for driving the team forward, a couple of errors of judgement forgiven due to his inexperience and age. Then there was Nacer Chadli who helped himself to a couple of goals but contributed so much more over the entire game as an attacking and creative threat.

Through to the next round in true Tottenham fashion, make the task impossible before going for it. Tim Sherwood chose an adventurous set up  and yet for more than fifty minutes though there was almost total control there was as usual very little cutting edge. Christian eriksen was our most dangerous attacker for the majority of the first half though Soldado and Adebayor worked extremely hard.

Dembele looked at home in the centre of the pitch with his old partner Sandro, “The Beast ” returned sporting a colourful beard but put in his usual solid performance, in a 4 4 2 formation surely that partnership has proven itself to be extremely formidable. Special mentions for Zeki Fryers and Naughton who both put in strong performances.

This Manchester United youngster has now joined Tottenham and the transfer tribunal will decide the fee,it is understood that United are looking for a fee of £4m Tottenham value him at £2m so £3m it is then.

Fryers is apparently a left back but can play centre half and has great speed, maybe we have another Kyle Walker to fill the left flank, now that would be exciting with those 2 on opposite flanks and Bale and Lennon in front of them.
