With Younes Kaboul newly established as club captain and with two able deputies in Hugo Lloris and Emanuel Adebayor also appointed it must surely be expected that at least one of them will be handed the armband for tomorrows opening fixture in Europe. With such a huge and powerful squad to call upon Mauricio Pochettino will undoubtedly take the opportunity to rotate his squad, some players need to be saved for upcoming fixtures while others need minutes to reach match fitness.

Once the Tottenham squad return from International duty this week it will be necessary to choose the club captain, Mauricio Pochettino went to great pains to point out that he wished to wait until after the transfer window closed to make the appointment and he also said that it was a matter for the entire squad to have input. Because of the delay many have jumped to the conclusion that one of the new signings was to be appointed with Fazio, being a fellow countryman and the captain of Sevilla, of course he was only appointed their captain in this close season the club having sold last years captain to Barcelona. So who might it be?

Central defence in safe hands with Pochettino. 0

Coaches, goalkeepers, defenders and teams love to keep clean sheets, as a central defender of some repute our own coach Mauricio Pochettino will be anxious to shore up what was a porous defence as Tottenham lost heavily to teams in the top three throughout last season. As an ex central defender he will know that the set up of the team is as vital as having the right players in place and that will mean the return of the defensive midfield anchor, maybe even two on occasions.

Though important to have a secure defensive set up winning games is even more important, as we have seen in the opening two friendlies a high line, pressing and plenty of play in and around the oppositions penalty box is essential to his plans. Though five goals have been conceded during the two games it should be taken into context, the players have only just returned to training and many of the lineups are experimental designed to give every touring player pitch time and to aid conditioning and match fitness.

The “silence is deafening” has been met with various reports that the Tottenham Board and Daniel Levy have sought to back Tim Sherwood despite the 4-0 reversal and second half capitulation at Chelsea. As you might expect all of these reports are contradictory but it does seem that they are little more than acknowledging that he has done reasonably well and that the club have no intention of replacing him this season, a far cry from ensuring he will be in charge come the beginning of next season.

Tottenham have already secured Vertonghen replacement. 1

There has been plenty of speculation that Jan Vertonghen will look to move come the summer with Barcelona and Manchester United his most likely suitors, both clubs would seem to be in need of a player of such quality but the more likely Manchester club would be City as it is Champions League football that the player seeks and United will not be offering that next year, then there is the issue of Daniel Levy selling to rival clubs and so if it is to happen Spain or France might seem the most likely destination.

As in the day of Harry Redknapp so Adebayor is similarly happy with current coach Tim Sherwood with the common denominator being that he is chosen for the team no matter what. Now there are times when his usefulness to the team is obvious and evident but with news of the details of the row he himself perpetrated with AVB, which he has now decided to reveal, comes concern.

As well as Moussa Dembele’s apparent rant about missing  just two and a half games all season resulting in his desire to leave Tottenham at all costs in January, as well as the European giants of Aston Villa and Newcastle turning his head news has now reached us that Cardiff have made their position known and so the chances of Dembele remaining in the title challenge with Tottenham seem slim. How can Tottenham compete with the salary on offer at any of those three clubs who will dwarf his current salary of somewhere in the region of £50k pw. Napoli are another looking to whisk him off to Italy and surely represent a more realistic option rather than the three Premier League clubs in question.

Today’s main concern is obviously all about winning the Europa Cup fixture against Anzhi and AVB has taken an exceptionally strong squad with him to Russia. Paulinho and Jan Vertonghen were the most notable non travellers for no other reason than to give them some much needed rest and relaxation. The squad have taken this opportunity to further increase bonding and team spirit with some sight seeing for the group in between preparing for an important game.

Last night AVB rotated his squad to such an extent that he was able to make eight changes to from Sundays fixture against Swansea and his team still dominated proceedings, considering that he will also have another three new squad members costing the best part of £50m available come the next fixture there can be little doubt that he now has one of the strongest squads in the premier league.
