Football preview Newcastle v Spurs. 0

Posted on February 12, 2014 by Tony

Tonight Tottenham visit Newcastle, not the happiest of hunting grounds in recent times though we normally travel there in the opening games of the season. Last year another late goal did for us and Younes Kaboul picked up the injury that has so devastated his career since as it ended his last season and he has rarely featured this. Newcastle also managed to somehow find a win at White Hart Lane this season despite being battered for the best part of an hour or more, on that occasion Tim Krul was a keeper possessed but reports suggest he might be an injury doubt for this evening.

If anyone has been reading the comments made by most Arsenal supporters up until recently you would have expected that they would have been welcoming three or four marquee signings  to the Emirates to make their debuts on Saturday, instead a young French striker sat on the bench fresh from the French second division and who arrived for the princely sum of zilch.

So it comes down to the final game of the season, assuming that Tottenham do their job and beat Sunderland at White Hart Lane they must then rely upon Newcastle United managing to prevent a resurgent Arsenal from winning on their patch. Can they do it? well of course anything is possible but I can’t help thinking that this team under Pardew no longer puts the frighteners on visiting teams as they once did.

Will Arsenal cave under Tottenham pressure? 0

We have been here many times before, Tottenham going into the final week of the season needing some sort of result to ensure that they achieve the right ending and cheer all their supporters, usually the pressure is on Tottenham to achieve an unlikely result as they face the most difficult task of all the teams involved. This season is a little different, by winning at Stoke yesterday the pressure was transferred entirely onto the Arsenal team as they now face 2 difficult fixtures, first up is the new FA Cup winners Wigan a team on a high and also knowing that only a win at the Emirates gives them any chance of saving themselves from relegation.

For ten or more years we have listened to the ex-pro tv pundits like Hansen and Lawrenson predicting the usual top four, that still remains so to this day but now consists of Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Liverpool one of the previous encumbents were overthrown by Tottenham a couple of seasons back, much to the dismay and shock of said pundits, Chelsea followed last season but retained their entry only by winning the competition against all odds.
