AVB made seven changes to the team that began Thursdays Europa Cup tie but with the prospect of a Capital One Cup fixture on Wednesday against the same Hull side just who will he pick for this Premier League fixture. Andros Townsend, Paulinho and Kyle Walker were excused the journey on Thursday and will all be certainties to start the game but who else do we expect to start.

Madrid in market for Ramires or Paulinho in January! Ramsey might be a more realistic target. 7

It always happens during the international break and the quiet moments between transfer windows, reporters are looking for stories to supply editors to fill the back pages and today we are treated to one of the best by the Metro. Apparently the Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has begun to draw up plans to recruit a box to box midfielder during the January transfer window because of concerns over the fitness and longterm future of Xavi Alonso.

When supporters knew of Tottenham interest in Paulinho most probably took far more interest in the Confederation Cup than they might normally have done, already aware of the player following England’s earlier friendly in Brazil and his exquisite equalising goal, our appetites were whetted by the prospect.

Paulinho had a high price on his head but with that came a reputation as the complete box to box player and a player that had cemented his place in the national team by virtue of outstanding all action performances. His club Corinthians had placed a £17m get out clause in his contract and Tottenham did not hesitate, even Daniel Levy who always seems to seek some sort of deal simply offered the asking price so highly did they rate him.

Last season when Sandro went down in obvious agony during the away fixture at QPR not only did Tottenham lose two points with a goalless draw, which you could argue eventually cost 4th place, but they lost a leader and a player who had become synonymous with graft and a never say die attitude, he was warrior of a player who didn’t know the meaning of defeat and is clearly an important member of the group.

Do City and Spurs have the edge in midfield? 3

Having watched a lot of football this season including all of Tottenham’s eight fixtures and a couple of Manchester City games, it seems to me that both clubs now have within their ranks the type of players that can overpower and bully the opposition almost to the point of submission.

It’s the late late Bale show, I mean Paulinho show. 10

Tottenham will probably soon be known again as a one man team as Paulinho has replaced Gareth Bale as the player to snatch last minute goals and all the points. In all fairness the result in the end was perhaps harsh on Cardiff as for ninety three minutes they stood up to a superb attacking Tottenham performance which resulted in a total of 29 shots on the home teams goal and a Man of the Match performance from the home keeper David Marshall.

Southern softies, no fight, soft underbelly, how many times has the Tottenham team and in particular their midfield been referred to in such a way? Well no longer, AVB has not just one midfielder prepared to fight and battle but a squad full of players prepared to give their all for the cause.

Tottenham’s first buy and first record signing of the summer at £17m. Shortly after Brazil’s triumph at the Confederation Cup all the talk of will he or won’t he soon came to an end as Paulinho put pen to paper and signed for Tottenham, a midfield machine became the first part of the new Tottenham under AVB who himself was about to embark on a second season at a club for the first time ever in his career.

The five players Arsenal need to turn them into title contenders. 4

Arsene Wenger, most of his staff and virtually every supporter of the club must be very well aware of the type of players needed and the specific positions that they play that requires major improvement. You only have to listen and read the moans and groans of most supporters to be aware but still Wenger simply goes about papering over the cracks on the cheap rather than pay for a professional job.

Let’s hope this sorry saga ends with Lamela signing. 0

Where exactly is Erik Lamela? it has been suggested that he has been in London for a couple of days now in order to complete his medical and put his name to his Tottenham contract, he was though still training with his Roma teammates yesterday and is expected to be flying in today to finalise everything.
