Liverpool not an option for Vertonghen. 0

Posted on March 02, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

Today’s reports that Liverpool are aiming to pinch Jan Vertonghen from under Tottenham’s noses are miles apart from the truth, it is true that Vertonghen is the type of player that any decent club would wish to have in their ranks and there have been links to at least one of the Spanish giants as well as the fallen giant of English football Manchester United. As we all know Tottenham and Daniel Levy no longer sell their star players to teams in direct competition and though Liverpool are dominant at the moment they really could not afford the type of money Tottenham would demand to release him to a team in the Premiership.

Caulker exit surprise. Cardiff switch confirmed. Replacement delay. 1

Somewhat out of the blue it seems that Steven Caulker has beeen sold to Cardiff for a fee in the region of £9m. For some time it was believed that Caulker would be the next great defender to come through the ranks after the defector Campbell and King, by name and by ability. He managed to feature in twenty eight games last season and did reasonably well, managing a call up for England duty and a goal on his International debut.
Whilst we all hoped that he would take over from Ledley it seems clear that it was a task too far, as one of our own, and he is only young, hopefully he will still go on to become a great player but in comparison to the likes of Jan Vertonghen it was clear that times have changed and much more should be expected of a great central defender. Campbell was a defender pure and simple while Ledley had so much more, great defensively, able to read the game and comfortable on the ball, Vertonghen has all that but perhaps lacks Ledley’s great pace when he was in his pomp.
Maybe it is a little surprising that Tottenham have not given the player more time or another loan for a season, perhaps the player himself was demanding more playing time or a permanent move rather than a loan, whichever it is it is perhaps a little disappointing but he managed less playing time toward the end of the season and once Vertonghen could be released from his left back duties, and he did not cover himself in glory at the U21’s tournament over the summer.
It was reported that Tottenham had virtually completed the signing of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest and as a right footed player he is a surprising replacement for Caulker, however he is another central defender possessing fantastic technical ability and a real offensive edge to his game, it seems that the owner of the club, serving time in prison, has thrown a spanner in the works but hopefully any problem will be ironed out.
Hopefully Vertonghen will return from his injury in time to take his place in the team for the first game of the season, it would also be good to see Younes Kaboul get some game time before the season starts and finally prove his fitness, Tottenham need him back to his best.

Possible delay in Vertonghen and Kaboul combo. 2

So the battle is on for Jan Vertonghen  to regain fitness for the start of the season and to take his place in the lineup alongside Younes Kaboul, an unfortunate slip in poor conditions in Hong Kong has possibly once again delayed what we all hope will be a wonderful defensive partnership.

Last season Kaboul was the recipient of an injury soon into the first game of the season and he did not reappear again, it has taken him almost a year but he is now back, the information being provided is that the ankle injury might possibly keep Vertonghen away for three to four weeks so with 22 days remaining before the season opener, make that 23 days because of the Sunday kick off, it could still happen if he is a quick healer and the medical staff can do their stuff.

While Kabouls away the Caulker should play. 0

Steven Caulker has now played the full game against Lazio and the second half against QPR and in his entire time on the pitch Tottenham have yet to concede a goal, he has now partnered Jan Vertonghen and William Gallas and has generally looked reasonably comfortable. The other important aspect of Caulkers game time this season has been the tremendous height and aerial ability in the opposition half, we should not forget that he scored a perfectly good goal against Lazio written off and just yesterday the equaliser came about due to his prescence in the box and winning the header from Bales corner.

Tottenhams’official website has released the news that Steven Caulker has signed a new contract until 2016,great news as it has been stated in the past the enormous potential he possesses and that he is future Tottenham captain material.

He is now also hardened to the rigours of the Premier league following a years loan spell at Swansea and he as well as Swansea acquitted themselves brilliantly, comfortably finishing in the top half of the table.
