Tottenham player ratings v Swansea 7

Posted on January 20, 2014 by Eddie S

In what was probably one of Tottenham’s best performances of the season just about every player put in strong performances and made a telling contribution but so too did the coaching staff who tactically got this one just about right, rather than go with an out and out defensive midfielder, who incidentally will be needed in some situations whether it be Sandro or Capoue, they plumped for a more fluid adaptable midfield three with width supplied by Chadli and Lennon supplemented by both fullbacks who incidentally were responsible for both second half goals. One other point to pick up on was the understanding and success of replacing Lennon with Naughton which allowed Kyle Walker to continue exploiting Swansea down that flank.

Before we get going let me first say that I have been won over to some extent by Tim Sherwood and his coaching team, he has quickly adapted and changed things following his first couple of games when he chose teams that were far too soft centred and gave precious little protection to the back four. It would now seem that the likes of Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro and Capoue will all at some point be crucial to his team selection and allow the flair and touch players to do their stuff in more advanced areas. There is still much to do and more difficult encounters to overcome but it will be interesting to see what tactical adjustments he makes in various situations and to cater for different opposition setups.

Let’s be totally honest things could have got a whole lot worse and the headlines could so easily have been screaming once again for AVB’s head but for a few outstanding contributions last night, even so it could have easily been different and Tottenham might have found themselves on easy street by half time but for some poor finishing, near misses and good keeping. AVB made a few changes and used his squad once again, losing Dembele to injury on the day was a bitter blow and most were surprised that Capoue started in his place, it didn’t really work and AVB made the change at halftime as much to protect him from a second booking and red card as to change the game.
