Tottenham v Chelsea a game of two halves ending in a fair result. 29

For much of the first half Tottenham held the upper hand all over the pitch, as we had suggested earlier today Andros Townsend was a thorn in their side as he continuously troubled Ashley Cole but unfortunately Mourinho managed to change things around in the second half to nullify him. Perhaps with a little more luck or decisive finishing the game might have been all over before half time as Paulinho hit the post and but for a great defensive action from Ivanovitch would also have had a tap in for 2-0 a little earlier.

For the past few days all the media attention has been firmly fixed on today’s Tottenham versus Chelsea fixture, or more like AVB versus Jose Mourinho. Some of the headlines have been outrageously exagerated, there might be differences of opinion and they might not even keep in contact any longer but they have not crossed swords in the same competition or league until now.

Maybe coaches actually encourage the attention in order to protect their players from unwanted attention, it really doesn’t matter, once the players step from the tunnel onto the pitch it is virtually all about them, the coaches can shout and encourage and slightly tweak position and movement, they can make changes in personnel and formation but the real action happens on the pitch.

Yesterdays result was disappointing but before going into it, firstly, I must admit that  I have to change my opinion on this Chelsea team, the youngsters did not roll over and collapse when the pressure came on at 2-1 they simply carried on playing the game and system that had served them so well for most of the first half, they fought ran and tackled and are true contenders.

Ok now that admision is over on to the Tottenham performance, from a statistical point of view reasonably impressive having more than twice as many efforts on goal as Chelsea and certainly the last hour was much improved and contributed to an absolutely fantastic game of football.

So far this season Chelsea led by Roberto Di Matteo have been fortunate in that they remain undefeated in the league, on some occasions perhaps a little luckily though. Going back a year, and the start of  the shortlived career of AVB at Chelsea, their fans should be reminded that after seven games Chelsea had just three points less as a result of a defeat at Manchester United, so five wins from seven games which then became six from eight.

Will the 2 that got away be the downfall of Tottenham 0

Next saturday we await the visit of Chelsea and hope to finally stamp our authority on the Premiership and announce that Tottenham have what it takes to challenge for the title. In front of us will be an undefeated Chelsea team ( other than in Europe ) who boast two players that were talked of as likely Tottenham purchases, in january when Tottenham were third in the league and actually pushing both Manchester clubs for the title it was widely reported that Tottenham was the likely destination for Eden Hazard, true or false, fact or fiction  he was a player highly regarded and within our price range, that is until City and Chelsea became involved. The fee did not represent a huge hurdle but wages of £8m a year did and so he joined Chelsea.
