Wenger talks up Sherwood credentials, I wonder why? 8

Over the past couple of seasons Tottenham have been too close for comfort to Arsenal in the chase for Champions League qualification, in fact each of the last two should have seen the trend change and Tottenham qualify at their expense. Because of this concerted challenge Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal board have come under increasing pressure though Tottenham’s recent demise has taken the pressure off as their fans seem to simply be happy to see Tottenham’s struggles.

On Tuesday Manchester City took on one of the heavyweights of European football Barcelona hoping to show that they had finally arrived themselves as a European force to be reckoned with, though they put up a terrific show they failed to stamp their authority on the game even changing their gameplan to accommodate the opposition, no surprise there had it been the away fixture perhaps. Early in the second half City made a couple of fatal errors, firstly Navas their flying little winger having lost possession of the ball went to ground attempting to gain an advantage by winning a free kick, as their players hesitated Barcelona struck and though the initial contact with Messi might have been fractionally outside the penalty box it was a clear foul, a clear goalscoring opportunity and the referee had no option but show a red card irrespective of whether it was in or out of the box.

Arsenal support turns on Ozil and Wenger. 7

Mention Arsenal on this site and we are inundated with abuse and condemnation from the red side of North London yet when Tottenham suffer a humiliating defeat watch the ridicule that heads our way from the Arsenal supporters who just like us love to see our neighbours fail. When Arsenal players like Frimpong , now shown the door,  Szczesny who quickly jumped onto Twitter to ridicule our 6-0 defeat at City and one or two others attempt to wind us up then when the opportunity arises that the same thing happens to Arsenal then it is only reasonable for them to expect ridicule in return. Today Arsenal were battered by the same five goals by Liverpool, four of them in the first 19 minutes,  just like the six at the Etihad the same hiding was handed out to Arsenal.

Following news of the likely transfer of Juan Mata to a Manchester United team that has faltered and become easy prey to any team with sufficient belief, Arsene Wenger has publicly stated that he believes that the deal is as much a plot by Chelsea and Mourinho to manipulate the destiny of the league title. Coming so soon after Chelsea completed their two games against the fading champions Wenger has stated that he thinks the deal has been approved in an attempt to improve United sufficiently to pick up points when they play City and Arsenal so giving Chelsea an advantage in the chase for the title.

During Arsene Wengers reign at Arsenal he has been credited with having the ability to identify and bring the very best from some exceptional young talent, players like Anelka, Henry, Febregas, Adebayor, Walcott, Ramsey, Nasri and Oxlade-Chamberlain to name but a few. Many of those players cost substantial sums even though they were not the finished article and the fee was for potential, Henry £10m, Walcott £10m, Nasri £16m, Adebayor £7m, Ramsey £5m and Oxlade-Chamberlain £12m.

Arsene Wengers comment that he would rather have the 3 man firepower of his own team than that of one man Tottenham, in the form of Gareth Bale, could be construed as a veiled dig at Adebayor. Of course we know that Adebayor has not been the same player that we saw last season but Wenger would be wise to note that he was highly motivated against them in the first fixture, and in the 18 minutes he was on the pitch scored against them again.

Things in one half of  North London and Madrid are not going to plan at the moment, Arsenal are battling with Tottenham and Chelsea for a top four position and entry into the Champions League, this as we know is considered by Arsene Wenger to be as good as winning a trophy. Over in Spain the “special one” Jose Mourinho has already given up the ghost on retaining their domestic league title, they currently sit third in a two horse race.
