The 3 new premiership teams Arsenal, Liverpool and United.

We all know that the three teams promoted from the Championship last season were Leicester, Burnley and QPR and we all look forward to seeing how they fare and who they bring in to give them their best chance of survival. We know from yesterdays report that QPR have dispensed with about 15 players from last seasons squad though a great number of them were loans. They will all be active in the market and will hope to add the numbers and quality to enable them to compete in what is the most competitive league in football.
Last summer Tottenham received a massive windfall with a record sum being paid to them for Gareth Bale and they took the opportunity to fill their boots and buy seven new recruits, as we all now know it didn’t quite work out as planned and the severe upheaval had a detrimental effect on the club and performances to some extent, they had the players to take on and beat all but the top clubs and even Arsene Wenger put much of this down to the enormous number of new players and a lack of teamwork as a result.
Manchester City held on to win the title and have already added to their squad as have Chelsea who were in need of improvement in certain areas but the other major clubs that have enjoyed Champions League involvement for most of the premiership era all consider themselves to be also rans in the title chase and are extremely fearful of being eliminated from the competition in the future.
Manchester United have for the first time in decades been eliminated not only from the Champions League but any European competition, even little Aberystwyth Town who play Derry City in the Europa League on Thursday have poked fun at Manchester United by tweeting a picture of the players travelling to the fixture with the caption: “Hey Man Utd, we are all off to Europe, are you?” .

Liverpool clawed themselves back into the Champions League last year much to the amazement of many but the reality of that situation was the Suarez effect, if ever a team was beholding to one player last year it was Liverpool, many had pointed to Bale doing the same for Tottenham but mot to the extent of Suarez with all those goals despite his early season suspension. Add to that the fact that like United this coming season Liverpool did not have the distraction of Europe and perhaps their season should have in fact ended betterand with some sort of silverware.

Arsenal are a different kettle of fish, last year they finally splashed the cash on Ozil who was surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, and though he started well performances tailed off and many of the Arsenal supporters were regretting his purchase as they dropped out of contention for the title, their one saving grace was winning the FA Cup which glossed over many of the same old problems they face following almost ten years of failure. Wenger signed his new contract which  might not have happened without that Wembley win, no wonder he was dancing on the pitch.

With so many fantastic players showcasing their skills at the current World Cup the three clubs lagging behind City and Chelsea and fearful of the threat from Tottenham and now Everton are being linked to just about every player who performs well. Liverpool have struck early and seem to have secured three players so far but they are linked to several others along with Arsenal and Tottenham, sometimes it seems like the three clubs should have just the one scouting team and leave negotiations down to their directors.

Manchester United quickly became a team in trouble without Ferguson in control, almost overnight they went from runaway champions to seventh place and deservedly so. Now their ageing squad needs a massive overhaul and in little more than 6 months have splashed £100m on 3 players and it won’t be stopping there, Ferdinand, Giggs and Scholes have all retired and none have been adequately replaced as yet. their choice of Cleverley over Pogba is now being seen as a complete nightmare of a decision and they still need help in many positions.

Balotelli, James Rodriguez, Falcao, Vidal, Lovren, Morata Di Maria, Sanchez Khedira and several others have all been linked to moves to the premiership with United, Liverpool and Arsenal as leading contenders for their signatures.

In my opinion United and Liverpool will buy big and often as they are the teams most in need and threatened with failure this coming season, Liverpool will be without Suarez until Novemeber and probably longer as he seems certain to go to Spain and probably Barcelona, though I expect Arsenal to spend big again it will probably be on just the one player, a decent rightback and a couple of low level additions, Wenger won’t change that much from his tried and tested method of relative failure but a top four spot.

So make that two new teams, United and Liverpool, plus the promoted teams.
