The best player in Brazil set to lead Tottenham to Glory.

Posted on September 26, 2013 by Tony

When supporters knew of Tottenham interest in Paulinho most probably took far more interest in the Confederation Cup than they might normally have done, already aware of the player following England’s earlier friendly in Brazil and his exquisite equalising goal, our appetites were whetted by the prospect.

Paulinho had a high price on his head but with that came a reputation as the complete box to box player and a player that had cemented his place in the national team by virtue of outstanding all action performances. His club Corinthians had placed a £17m get out clause in his contract and Tottenham did not hesitate, even Daniel Levy who always seems to seek some sort of deal simply offered the asking price so highly did they rate him.

Just a few months later and his old club are realising their error in not raising the fee to a level to put off suitors, as results deteriorate they are putting it all down to the loss of their star man, a player who almost guaranteed a strike rate of a goal every four games and the creator of chance after chance for his teammates. Corinthians coach Tite had this to say of Paulinho:-

“When we finished the Recopa Paulistão I was asked if Paulinho was the second best player in Brazil. I said he was the first.”

Since Paulinho left Corinthians have gone into decline and are currently 11th in the league 17 points behind the league leaders and let us not forget that with Paulinho in their ranks they beat Chelsea to become the current World Club Champions.

Paulinho is under there somewhere.

Paulinho is under there somewhere.

Now Paulinho is doing his thing for Tottenham, he has three goals in eight matches including goals in his last two games and is one of the driving forces in a team that has eight wins in nine games.

Corinthians loss has certainly been Tottenham’s gain even at a cost of £17m, they sit level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table, are through to the next round of the Capital Cup and sit top of their group in the Europa League. Paulinho has already proved his credentials in the Premier League and looks set to be one of the stars of the season, not only that but he seems to be genuinely enjoying his time with Tottenham in what seems a very happy camp at the moment.

Paulinho is obviously a winner and he along with a number of other winners purchased during AVB’s time with Tottenham seem to have brought that mentality with them into this entire Tottenham squad. There will doubtless be setbacks along the way but with this squad at his disposal are we likely to expect another period of capitulation as under Redknapp while he sought the England job, or even the relatively poor run in March and April last season as the squad tired.

After five games last season Tottenham sat eighth behind every one of the eventual top four, now only Arsenal on goal difference separates them from first place, there has been a seven point swing over Chelsea and a massive nine point swing over United. Tottenham are in the fortunate position of having Paulinho in their ranks but also know that they have several other big players to call upon if things get tough.

I’m not even sure Manchester united have a ladies football team let alone a player by the name of Rachel Van Persie, you might not have heard of Pauline the Brazilian who plays for Spurs ladies yet but you might.I’ll give you that Arsenal will win the league but of course that is only Arsenal ladies.

  2. craig says:

Of course we know that arsenal have little knowledge of the quality Brazilian players, they thought that Santos was good when they paid £6.2m for him and gave him away for nothing a year later.

  3. tom says:

well not any more now he is the best player in England.
