The case against Real Madrid and Barcelona for Gareth Bale and others.

Posted on May 27, 2013 by Eddie S

With all the talk of Gareth Bale being pursued by Real Madrid and now Luis Suarez becoming another of their targets it is worth considering some of the purchases of both of Spain’s dominant clubs in recent times and just how they have fared.

Barcelona have been the standout performers in Spanish and European football for a good few years now and have been rightly acclaimed as the best team on the planet for much of that period. We all know that the star attractions have been Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, all players that have come up through the ranks ably backed up by other stalwarts and a few shrewd purchases that have grown with them. Barcelona have purchased a few big names and expensive personnel, Fabregas was pursued for a number of years from Arsenal before they won the day, he was of course one of their own having left the Barca youth setup to become the player he did at Arsenal. He has won some important competitions with Barcelona since he returned but not the Champions League, more noticeably a player of his stature has not become a better player but more a bit part player in their setup.

Fabregas is not the only expensive Barcelona acquisition that has not quite worked out so far, David Villa joined as the greatest Spanish striker of his generation, he is no longer guaranteed to play for either Barcelona nor Spain and is seeking a way out, Mascherano fom Liverpool, Song from Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez wanted by all the best clubs have all struggled to establish themselves and have not gone on to become bigger stars but quite the opposite.

Over in Madrid the problem is much the same made worse by the fact that that they are way behind Barcelona and have just one league title and a cup to their name in the past 5 years. They have one of the 2 best players in world football, have been coached for the past 3 seasons by the supposed “special one” and they have actually gone backwards. Luka Modric joined last season and has been voted the worst purchase in the league, Nuri Sahin once a big name is being loaned out in an attempt to rediscover form and his dignity, Fabio Coentrao came with a big reputation for a huge fee and he has been frozen out and is extremely unhappy with life there. Kaka, once the best player in the world bought for a then record fee has had an awful time, Higuain looking for a way out. Ronaldo joined for £80m he has been a success but the trophy haul and European and domestic championships he was expecting have passed him by.

Following the triumphs of the German teams over both Spanish clubs in reaching the Champions League final, the manner of their victories by significant margins, Spanish dominance seems over. Bayern have been in the last 2 finals and Chelsea and Dortmund faced them, Monaco, PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City are the teams snapping up all of the major stars from around the world these days.

Any young up and coming player with such huge potential should think twice before risking their career on joining either of the Spanish giants, especially Real Madrid which is becoming a graveyard for many careers and especially those not of Spanish descent.
