The case for the defensive midfielder proven.

Posted on February 13, 2014 by Scraggs

Less than a couple of weeks back Les Ferdinand was quite open in declaring that the defensive midfielder was likely to be a thing of the past and a dinosaur in the current Premiership era, especially while the current coaching partnership was in place, apparently himself, Sherwood and Chris Ramsey had all agreed that the position was not for Tottenham and an unnecessary evil. Many Tottenham supporters were a little concerned to hear such thoughts being openly admitted as one of their firm favourites is “The Beast” Sandro Raniere.

During the time Sherwood has been in charge and while Sandro has been injured the other specialist in that defensive position Etienne Capoue had all but been frozen out and given very little playing time, most expected him to depart for all of the

transfer window with Napoli seeming to be most keen to acquire his services, but as we all know by now there is market price and then there is Daniel Levy’s market price and if you don’t meet that you won’t get the player.

Last night Sherwood finally chose Capoue but retained the other three central midfielders leaving many concerned as to how the combination might work, in what seemed to be a 4 1 4 1 formation the team put in the performance of the season so far, even those critical of continuing to choose Bentaleb , myself included, were treated to one of his best displays, having been released from the responsibility of being the main defensive option he relished a more attacking role and was very influential in forward positions.

As for Capoue yet again he put in a tremendous performance made more impressive by his ability and pace which allowed him to get forward when the opportunity arose, behind him the extra pace of Younes Kaboul was also a massive bonus and hopefully he will retain fitness and begin to form a partnership with Vertonghen that most believe will blossom given the chance.

players returning after injury there is every chance that one or two of the teams above us might yet be caught and thankfully the role of the defensive midfielder might be seen as a beneficial attacking ploy after all, Chelsea showed what could be done with two away from home in the right formation and last night Tottenham and Sherwood also put it into practice and were rewarded with a four goal destruction of Newcastle which might easily have been far more convincing by the end.

surprised it’s taken so long for it to sink in and that is the main concern from a coach.
