The day after tangling with the Sheriff.

Seven changes to the team that faced Aston Villa on Sunday but still it looked an impressive team on paper. the game was not particularly pretty but from Tottenham’s perspective it was a job well done, that is becoming the order of the day especially away from White Hart Lane.

It is often said that to win games ugly, when the chips are down and when the team is not playing particularly well is a sign of a very good team, at the moment Tottenham are taking this analogy to the limit as whilst they seem to be winning with relative comfort there is still no real flow or momentum to their game and the pace of their attacks are a little cumbersome. Obviously appearances are deceptive as despite eleven clean sheets in fourteen games statistically Tottenham remain one of the most offensive teams in the league, level with Chelsea  and Manchester City in shots and possession.

Yesterday Tottenham were a little loose at the back on occasions giving the home team a few opportunities to get back into the game, losing Zeki Fryers to injury was a little disrupting with an hour remaining but it gave AVB the chance to experiment with Vlad Chiriches moving to right back and he looked to be very comfortable giving AVB even more options.

With possession of more than 75% perhaps the result should have been more convincing and had the second goal gone in earlier perhaps it might have been, Congratulations go to Jermain Defoe who got his customary goal to go level with Martin Chivers at the top of Tottenham’s European goalscoring chart, that is a very impressive twenty-two goals in thirty-four fixtures.

Probably because of the early injury to Fryers requiring the early entrance of Michael Dawson and the spirited efforts of the opposition AVB failed to introduce Adebayor which was perhaps a little disappointing, JD got his goal but in reality hardly ran the Sheriff defence ragged and was relatively easily handled.

Tottenham remain a work in progress as the team continue to grow as a unit but results continue to tick along nicely, after Hull on Sunday things step up to a much higher level in the league with Everton, United and City lying in wait, it is unlikely that they will enable Tottenham to ride their luck and it will be necessary to step it up a little by the time those games come around.
