Thoughts on Tottenham lineup for Manchester United.

Posted on November 29, 2013 by Scraggs

Last Sunday Tottenham lined up against quite probably the strongest team in the division, certainly on their own pitch Manchester City not only have a hundred percent record but seem capable of scoring goals for fun against even the very best. Next up it’s Manchester United still not the team they were but steadily improving and on a good run.

Last week quite apart from the numerous errors that resulted in such a humiliating defeat it might be fair to say that everything that could go wrong did go wrong, a slow start and an immediate mistake not only handed the lead to City but altered the dynamic of the game, a second catalogue of errors handed them the second goal and put paid to a decent effort by the team to claw their way back into the game, after that it was almost like the team was shellshocked and the mistakes and goals flowed as discipline broke down.

David Moyes teams are always going to be strong and competitive, add to that the extra attacking quality they possess with Rooney and Van Persie and this is going to be a difficult encounter for Tottenham, had things been different and had they been going into the game confident and without the pressure that has built following two consecutive defeats Tottenham might have been considered favourites having taken four points from the two fixtures last season.

AVB has some important decisions to make when choosing his team, all the experts are trying to suggest that he needs to revert back to a 4 4 2 system so as to resolve the problem regarding lack of goals, while there might be occasions and teams when that system might be the answer to break down teams that defend in depth united are not one of those teams and Sunday is not the occasion. Because Soldado travelled and played at Tromso last night while Adebayor and Defoe stayed behind in England there might just be some smoke to this possibility although it was reported that Adebayor had picked up a knock from Sunday.

Lloris, Walker, Paulinho, Lennon, Defoe, Sandro and Kaboul were the others left behind as well as the injured and of those four will surely start on Sunday but maybe more. For this particular fixture I believe that AVB needs to choose a strong team prepared for a battle, control the midfield and possession and he then still has the bench to call upon to try to win the game late on if need be. AVB has a dilemma to overcome, does he change things in an attempt to bring about the goals that some of the supporters are clamouring for or stick to his original methods and risk more ridicule and the boring tag.

AVB v United last season. Same again please.

AVB v United last season. Same again please.

Last week he weakened the team by choosing too many flair players, some a little lightweight and so being that this is Manchester United and the current champions he must go for players to win the battle in midfield, he cannot afford another sloppy show like last week and he needs players to win the midfield battle. This might be the occasion to unite Sandro, Dembele and Paulinho in the central areas, Sandro to do what he does best, patrol and protect the back four, Paulinho AND Dembele as the box to box midfielders, each is capable of helping out Sandro but both should be allowed the freedom to drive at and into the danger areas and hurt the opposition. What exactly is the position with Danny Rose? we have been informed of return dates at various intervals, AVB stated a few weeks back he would be available for selection after the international break and still no sign of a return to action. Jan Vertonghen has been the chosen replacement but for this game I believe he must return to central defence to take care of RVP and alongside him Chiriches might have done enough to oust Michael Dawson who has put in a couple of indifferent performances.

If AVB wants a little more width then he will choose Lennon on the right but if he wants to be sure to blunt Evra’s attacking talent he will probably go with the man of the moment Andros Townsend, his performances this season have had to concentrate the minds of every fullback he has faced and if he can turn some of his efforts into goals and if he can find the bye line more often and deliver we could be in business.

Erik Lamela now seems to be getting to grips with things and always looks to make something happen, i hope to see him involved in the game at some point though probably not from the off, having said that AVB was happy to throw him in last week at City and he might be a surprise inclusion and just the sort of player that could take advantage of a defence lacking pace.

No final predictions on the lineup here just yet but we hope that AVB goes with a team of strength both mentally and physically, for this particular fixture if it ends 0-0 then bearing in mind the quality of the opposition wouldn’t we all take that? We want to win the game of course but equally for the good of AVB and the players there must be no gung-ho selections in an attempt to appease his detractors. The time to experiment will be against a lesser team than United and in the dead rubber of the Europa Cup coming up.

Chiri should partner kaboul not dawson.Chadli should start on the left with lamela on the right

    • Tony says:

I am starting to rate Chitiches and the time is approaching when he becomes first chioce with Vertonghen. Chadli needs run of games but he seems the most suited to left side. I would like to see Lamela find his feet and given free role like Bale. Tomorrow i think AVB has to go for tried and tested fighters and that has to include Townsend

  2. BigH says:

This is more of a must not lose game for AVB otherwise I fear the knives will really be out for him. We need to be solid and for me that means sandro and capoue in central midfield so we can let all the attackers, lamela/andros/lennon/demeble etc just focus on going forward. it will be tough physically and we need strong minds out there too with the right mentality. I really hope he makes no more stupid tactical errors in team selection. This game will not be for the faint hearted. COYS

    • Tony says:

Must not lose is about right. Strong spine a must. not sure if Capoue is ready just yet but he is a match for Fellaini. I just have a feeling that Lamela would thrive against the centre backs of United who lack pace, his quick feet might be their undoing.
