Three points Pochettino deserved with brave substitutions.

Posted on August 16, 2014 by Scraggs

The day started off comfortably as Tottenham dictated early possession though some of the good work was undone by sloppy play and overambitious passes. By the time Kyle Naughton was sent off the Hammers had taken a little more control than was good for us, even so the penalty decision was a little harsh while the red card was absolutely ridiculous. there was absolutely no intent and no chance whatsoever of avoiding being hit by the ball., I see an appeal coming up.

One time Tottenham target Downing was being a real danger and was the catalyst for all the Hammers dangerous moves, rose was struggling but credit is due to him, his teammates and the coach for finding a reasonable solution, the second half saw Rose as dangerous for Tottenham.

Playing against the home team a man down was always going to be fraught with danger but the team came out for the second half and took the game to the opposition and managed to take back control, credit has to go to Capoue  who showed his versatility by switching to play alongside Younes Kaboul with the youngster Dier asked to operate at right back.

While still up against eleven men Mauricio Pochettino made an early double substitution, some might have expected Michael Dawson to be introduced for one of our attacking options, instead even more attacking intent was introduced with townsend and Holtby brought on. The intensity of our attacks increased with both new additions heavily involved which continued in what had become an interesting more open game even after west Ham had their own player sent off after earning a second yellow preventing Adebayor strolling past him.

The West Ham keeper was by far the busiest and had to be at his sharpest to keep out Townsend on more than one occasion and Bentaleb. Hugo Lloris saved the game for Tottenham 2 minutes from time and showed why many believe him to be one of the top few in the world, speed and agility prevented a certain downing goal.

Four minutes of extra time was ticking away and with less than one of those minutes remaining the third Pochettino introduction Harry Kane picked up the ball in midfield and played an inch perfect pass in behind the opposition defence, Eric Dier the debutant who had shown his pace and poise in both positions he took up strode through, went past the keeper and stroked into the net for his first Tottenham goal and three valuable points.

Every player played their part and all improved as the game wore on, we had started out with a team with an average age of about 23 yrs and probably ended with even that reduced by a year or two.

So now we have something to work from and confidence to help us build on what became a decent encouraging performance.

let me tell you frankly this wasn’t the performance i expected based on our preseason and pochettino. Positives are dier, holtby, kane and to a certain extent erikson. It is only because of luck that we didnt concede goals early. Westham was very dangerous even before we down to 10 men. Lamela again disappointed me. . Bentaleb looked descent but needs more game time . There wasnt any pochettino style in our play. But im happy for dier. He looked better at rb . Kaboul wasnt upto the pace. Needs a lot of work. even erikson was bursting forward but couldnt find a killer ball. We didnt concede 3 or 4;because of poor striker called cole!! Pochettino should bring his soton style to us..

agree to some extent but let’s be honest hammers only got 4 shots on target the entire game and they all came after we went to 10men, It’s hard to judge because of the totally ridiculous red card for Naughton. Don’t you think you are being a bit negative considering it’s only 6 weeks ago the squad returned and some have only had 2 weeks. Of course it needs work but it takes time. look at utd and even arsenal, both teams talked of as potential title winners, both poor in all areas. and EVERY team has been lucky not to concede more, that’s football.

Im not blaming our team. But certainly nowhere near as a good tactical game shape. We were too soft, sloppy. Thats all. If west ham had a descent striker we would have down by minimum 2 Goals. That worried me. However hope things will get better. Needs the right balance. Well what about dier?? He looked phenominal at rb?? Right?? More composed and brilliant runs!!! I m impressed. Better than naughton.. Redcard was cruel

First game, could have totally bottled it but we didn’t. Yes fortunate, but beating the spammers always make me happy. Lets give it a few games before we can really start to judge

got to be happy with 3 points, at 30 mins we were staring down the barrel but a nice pen miss and strong showing from then on got us an unlikely win. can’t judge based on the situation we found ourselves in and with several players yet to become available the signs are good.

that ridiculous run of defeats is now behind us, normal service is resumed.
