Time for Townsend entrance, stage left.

Posted on February 06, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

Andros Townsend will be most remembered for his performances last year for QPR, Tottenham and England operating on the right hand side of midfield, he was given his Tottenham opportunity at the beginning of the season because of an early injury to Aaron Lennon and followed that up with an England call up as a result of the usual injuries to Theo Walcott. It is fair to say that Townsend took his chances with both hands and cemented his place in both teams and though his form in the Tottenham team was electric he failed to turn his ascendancy over almost every fullback into goals and assists, though few doubted his worth to the team it became obvious that he still needed to be more productive.

Following an injury setback early into Tim Sherwood’s reign Aaron Lennon has reclaimed his position on the right and though his last two outings have been anything but impressive if used correctly he can and often does destroy most defences, now is probably not the time to abandon Aaron Lennon as you sense some big performances will follow soon especially in World Cup year.

We are now informed that Andros is fit and raring to go once more, as a result of his outstanding England performances he is probably a certainty to go to Brazil but he still faces a battle to appear in the starting lineup, especially with Adam Johnson at last finding his true form with Sunderland, scoring goals and setting up chances with extreme regularity.

Andros Townsend in full flow. Back on the left?

Tottenham have been particularly unbalanced on the left ahead of Danny Rose, Christian Eriksen put in good show but lacked the pace and the defensive capability needed and is so well provided on the right by Lennon, Chadli, in my opinion, was a far better option but probably failed to offer the width needed preferring to cut in allowing Rose to overlap while Sigurdsson was somewhere inbetween. The return of Andros Townsend gives Sherwood the opportunity to give a great balance to the team by giving him the chance to operate down the left, he is very capable and has the opportunity to show Roy Hodgson he has another string to his bow.

As Sherwood has often said ” football is a simple game” but he has been particularly guilty of playing square pegs in round holes, as we approach the crucial stage of the season when every game and every point counts and with almost the entire squad to call upon now is the time to find the balance and go for it. Andros Townsend plays the game without fear and is happy and confisent enough to take on even the best defenders, his record so far this season is second to none and that is quite literally, he holds the most successful dribble success rate of any other player in the English top tier with 57 successful dribbles, averaging 4.07 per game. He has been dispossessed on 25 occasions this term, making his success rate 69.5% so far. That’s better than Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (3.8 per game), Liverpool’s Luis Suarez (2.9 per game), Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (1.6 per game) and, across the continent, that’s higher than Gareth Bale (1.1 per game), Cristiano Ronaldo (2 per game) and only marginally behind Lionel Messi (4.7 per game). Townsend is fit and it’s time to let him loose.

Moussa Dembele is back and will surely be reunited with Paulinho, other than that it should simply be a question of whether to play with a defensive midfielder or Eriksen in a slightly more advanced role, either way it must surely be time for balance and width.

Time to bring him back, he must be desperate to play and impress. with both Townsend and Lennon playing for a trip to Brazil surely a no brainer.
