Todays Tottenham news and newspaper jargon.

So far a quiet day, some of the squad warmed up with a comfortable 6-0 win in Hong Kong to take third place in the competition, Jermaine Defoe started up front and helped himself to a hat-trick with other goals coming from an OG, Townsend and Dempsey. It was again a poor pitch but relatively safe after the Tottenham groundsman did his stuff and ensured that it was playable and more importantly safe.

Gareth Bale was apparently still suffering from a knock received in training and so took no part in events, reporters took the opportunity to read into the situation that the Madrid transfer was on. When asked if there had in fact been a bid from Madrid AVB again refused to comment on the issue as he is obviously tiring of the whole episode and constant questioning, it irritates all Tottenham supporters so he must be absolutely fuming. Of course the press translate the refusal to discuss as an admission that there had in fact been a bid.

It is strange how many of the British tabloids are using the Marca fictional story of yesterday to lead with headlines declaring that Gareth Bale has demanded to go, even quoting “I only want to play for real madrid(small letters for a small team intended) and have no interest in joining Manchester United” It is quite funny that Marca are returning the compliment by quoting the Mirror and Mail as the leaders of the story that they invented.

Bids have apparently been made of £81m or £85m while Tottenham are holding out for 120m euros!!!! All these bids materialise from the British tabloids but nothing in Marca who you would expect to quote Perez or Zidane with the bid. Yesterday AVB confirmed Levy and Bale’s agent were in discussion over a new contract but no mention of how that was progressing, that one seems to have been conveniently brushed under the carpet for now.

If Bale were off clearly Tottenham would be receiving an enormous transfer fee therefore, can anyone explain just why there are such discussions going on over the fee for Soldardo, Tottenham are seemingly unwilling at this stage to meet the full asking price of £26m for the player and seem about £4m adrift, with £80m expected from a Bale sale it makes absolutely no sense that they would haggle and risk losing the player elsewhere.

At the moment the press of both England and Spain have very little to get their teeth into, many of the big deals have already been completed mostly in France and Italy, strange as it may seem, they are hanging onto the Bale, Rooney, Suarez and Fabregas stories for all they are worth and sensationalising wherever possible.

The feeling is still that Rooney and Bale will sign new deals with their existing clubs, Suarez will not be allowed to leave for a Premier League club and so strengthen a team that Liverpool would hope to close the gap on, while Fabregas would be foolish to leave Barcelona, his hometown club, when he is only a short time away from taking over as their main midfield orchestrator.

Unfortunately big sensational deals sell newspapers even when they are fictional, until the 4th September some will remain while others take the place of closed deals.
