Tottenham about to join the elite.

Posted on August 20, 2013 by Scraggs

With rumours abounding of transfer deals about to be completed for the likes of Willian and Lamela, both of whom might break the club transfer record already shattered twice this summer, Tottenham are clearly intent on building a squad to eventually compete against the very best and that is domestically and in Europe.

A little over two years ago Tottenham reached the quarter final of the Champions League where they finished up comfortably beaten by Real Madrid, take a look at the team and substitutes on that day and then let’s compare to the current squad in terms of quality.

Although the latest news in the pipeline is that Gareth Bale looks to be heading to Madrid for £93m plus Coentrao, who incidentally cost Madrid £25m just two years ago, Tottenham have remained on the lookout for more and more talent. assuming Bale does finally leave if those three players are added to the squad together with the likes of Holtsby, Carroll and Adebayor (an opposition player 2 years ago with 2 goals against us) it would be fair to say that with the possible exception of Modric the squad of 2 years ago is massively inferior to that being put together now, even Bale at that time was nowhere near the level of last year and might not be again.

Should Tottenham land their targets, irrespective of what happens with Bale, then they must be considered a very potent group, maybe not yet ready to beat the top few teams in Europe but very close. Perhaps ten or eleven of that group of 2 years ago would not get near this current squad and that shows the rate of improvement, if Bale does happen to stay then Tottenham obviously edge that little bit closer to the best.

Tottenham have grown massively in quality in recent years, Daniel Levy has been building steadily toward this moment and now he and Joe Lewis genuinely seem to believe they have all the pieces in place and that the time has arrived, a great coach in AVB with a fantastic team behind him, Tim Sherwood who has played an important role and is highly valued by Levy, one of the best training, medical and youth development centres in the world, Franco Baldini now proving to be an inspired choice as Director of Football. Tottenham already have a very competitive squad and now it is just a matter of adding the right components/players to make the step up to the highest level.

For too many years to mention Tottenham have been unable to match or compete with clubs like Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and even United, already Liverpool have been swept aside and judging from current events Arsenal will be next, the other three will be a much more difficult proposition simply because of their huge wealth, having said that Tottenham have almost sneaked up on them and are close behind, if they manage to secure the players needed then every Tottenham supporter should ready themselves for what could become the greatest period in their history.
