Tottenham and Liverpool to shake up top four.

Posted on September 02, 2013 by Eddie S

There does seem to be an element of panic setting in with many of last seasons top four and Champions League qualifiers beginning to consider their positions might not be so secure with both Tottenham and Liverpool really pushing the boat out and investing in a challenge.

Liverpool have maintained their hundred percent record with another 1-0 victory, this time over Manchester United and are still investing in the team and the squad with two defenders having already signed in the past 24hours at a combined fee of £25m, considering that they are yet to concede a goal, this is real statement of intent together with their stand on Luis Suarez, who looks likely to stay unless Madrid come along with another £50m. Victor Moses is rumoured to be on his way on loan from Chelsea which is a little strange as surely after their start they should be considered their rivals.

Despite Tottenham’s defeat yesterday there really should be no need for concern as the number of quality additions should compensate for the loss of Gareth Bale and they remain four points better off than this time last season, Tottenham have been defeated by 5-2 in each of their last two visits to the Emirates, even though Arsenal were still the better team it was close and all the stats were actually in Tottenham’s favour other than in the most important column of all, goals.

As things stand everyone of the top four clubs have their issues, City have already been defeated by promoted club Cardiff and the last fixture at home to another promoted team could quite easily have ended the same way as Hull could and should have been a couple of goals ahead by halftime.

United and Arsenal are having a disaster in the transfer window and now seem to be fighting over some of the same players, they are both involved in some panic buying whatever Wenger and Moyes might say, both have been beaten by other clubs in pursuit of certain players and realise that urgent action must be taken if they are to ensure a top four position without severe problems along the way.

At one point most believed that Chelsea would be the biggest challengers this season because of the Mourinho effect, but have rarely put in a convincing performance and they were comprehensively outplayed by Bayern on Friday, although they always  remained dangerous on the break. It will be interesting to see just who makes their final squad as they seem very overloaded in many positions while lacking in others.

This is a season when six clubs look set to battle for a top four spot, it is unlikely that the Champions will win as many points as in previous seasons as the Premier League becomes ever more competitive.
