Tottenham briefing 25/11.

Posted on January 25, 2014 by Eddie S

All the news at the moment seems to surround Manchester United as they look to spend a couple of hundred million in this transfer window, as far as the rest of us mere mortals are concerned it’s much more mundane though. Chelsea have bought a few players with the proceeds from the over inflated price received from United for Mata, Arsenal are threatening to splurge upwards of ¬£35m on another German and West Ham’s Big Sam does what he does best, look for loan signings to get his team out of relegation trouble.

Over at Tottenham’s headquarters things seem to be more tranquill, players are returning from injury and working with Tim and his coaching staff on the training pitches, the press are trying to sell off Capoue, Holtby and even Vertonghen, Jermain Defoe is busy saying his goodbyes, training and packing his bags in preparation for his new adventure in the MLS next month and apparently Franco Baldini is visiting his homeland trying to buy any number of useless alternatives to JD or even more midfielders that have been unable to play regularly this season to replace those in the same situation at Tottenham.

On what is another slow day and a period of stability at Tottenham it seems that Nabil Bentaleb has made the decision to represent the country from which his parents are descended rather than where he was born or currently lives, he has apparently agreed to represent Algeria and so seems almost certain to be travelling to Brazil this summer and he will hopefully have the opportunity to show us just what he can do at the World Cup.

Other than that there are rumours of a young Juventus striker on the wanted list, no chance unless Lamela were to go the other way you would think, Pritchard being wanted by Hull which would probably represent a good move in his development and Kenny Dalglish talking up the qualities and potential of Tim Sherwood as a top class coach.

With six days remaining in this transfer window it is beginning to seem as though Tottenham will rely upon their existing squad members and the three strikers will be Soldado, Adebayor and Kane once Defoe departs, hopefully once Lamella recovers from his injury he will get opportunities to show us what he can do. We know that Daniel Levy does love a last minute bargain and has pulled a rabbit from the hat on occasions but he is not normally renowned as a winter transfer market operator, with Baldini in his first year as Director of Football perhaps he might be the one with a trick up his sleeve?

It is all a little quiet at the moment and we Tottenham supporters are not used to such inactivity, where is Leandro Damiao and Guiseppe Rossi, has David Villa disappeared from the face of the earth as we don’t know whether his move in the summer was a success or failure, there have been no links to a new central defender or an extra left back, a position that we have been so desperate to fill all this season. Apart from most supporters hope that the club do not give up on Lewis Holtby or Etienne Capoue just yet, this window has been nothing short of lethargic and it leaves us unsure whether that is a good thing or not. In an ideal world the safety of a replacement for Defoe for the remainder of the season would probably satisfy us but there are no players that spring to mind, if it is to happen it is likely to be a short term replacement at best.

Very content with this group of  players but happy to be surprised if the right addition can be found.
