Tottenham close to within striking distance of Arsenal in role reversal.

Posted on February 13, 2014 by Scraggs

For the past two seasons Tottenham have led Arsenal by points and position going into February and though that has also been the case as the teams enter March it has been the case that the gap closed during that month. Just ten short days ago Arsenal led the Premier League and their points total having played the same number of games was eleven points better than our own. There we were languishing in sixth place and seemingly out of contention for fourth pace having been beaten out of sight by Manchester City and held to a bore draw at Hull.

It doesn’t take long for things to change and now the deficit is just six points and Tottenham now have the best away record in the league by some considerable margin. Here we are just seven points off top place, the closest we have ever been going into the final phase of the season and though we have no pretensions of actually finishing higher than fourth it has to be said that we have every bit as much chance as Liverpool and Arsenal as of this moment our squad is probably the stronger and deeper of them both, any further injuries to either club could prove awkward while Tottenham are actually finding some big stars returning to action and still seeking form and fitness.

Most realistic supporters would probably consider that City and Chelsea are the strongest of the top six and yet Arsenal are about to find themselves eliminated from all cup competitions as usual so as to concentrate on securing a position in the top four, they have done so most years since their last trophy almost nine seasons ago though this time the tables are turned and they are the team being hunted down and so far they haven’t managed to warm to the task.

After the thrashing of Arsenal it was then the turn of Liverpool to be touted as possible title winners and though they eventually defeated Fulham last night to close the gap on both Arsenal and Chelsea it was not a good performance and just as quickly as they play like potential title winners they are as capable of putting in scrappy performances, last night they were extremely fortunate to take the extra couple of points which might prove crucial but on another occasion they might end up empty handed. I suppose the point is though extremely unlikely as of this moment Tottenham have just as much chance of overtaking any of the four above them as the four feted so much right now and with Norwich and Cardiff next up while nothing should be taken for granted another six points might make things all the more interesting before the six pointers kick in. If we get through the three games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool with something to show for it our remaining run of fixtures to the end of the season is less daunting than the rest.

Arsenal have become used to starting poorly and finishing strong but this season has seen them lead the table longer than any other team, their supporters have been on a high convinced that this would be the season when they at last got back to trophy winning ways, go on their supporter sites now and read the comments and you will see a very unhappy bunch as they turn on Wenger, Giroud, Ozil, Wilshire, Arteta and Mertesacker, they have missed the input of Ramsey and Walcott much more than they might have imagined and Ozil it seems is not and probably never really was the catalyst to change them into champions of anything.

The chase for a top four position is probably limited to just six clubs but it is difficult to ever really dismiss United so I won’t tempt providence by doing so, though as each game goes past they become ever more detached and their results are now actually deteriorating rather than improving, going into the New Year they were level with us and just three points from fourth place, since then we have pulled eight points clear and they are a further three behind fourth placed Liverpool.

To be fair to Tottenham despite all the adverse publicity, the doom and gloom, underachievement and wasted investment we are seven points from leading the table and even at the time of AVB’s departure they were just eight points behind table topping Arsenal, they have several points more away from home than both Chelsea and City, three more than Arsenal. It makes you wonder what might have been had we had a good season or what might actually happen if the team find their feet and form going into the final stages.

As Del might say ” We’ve had worse day’s Rodney”
