Tottenham far from ready to start the season.

We all know that pre-season friendlies are not the be all and end all in relation to how the season will go, as Gus Poyet pointed out yesterday he and Juande Ramos started the season with a magical set of results , all substantial wins, once the season started, as Harry Redknapp will remind everybody who will listen, Tottenham managed just two points in their first eight games.

Once again all the planning has gone up in smoke because of the antics of Real Madrid and their obsession with buying Gareth Bale this summer, some say that Barcelona securing the services of Neymar forced their hand as they feared being overtaken by Barcelona in the financial stakes as well as remaining far their superior in Spanish and European football. Whatever the reason a calm camp early in July when the squad got back together turned into a media farce and constant unrest. Eventually it started to turn nasty and the antics of Madrid and Bale himself began to disrupt everything.

Of course it hasn’t been all about the Bale disruption, Tottenhan did move earlier in the transfer window than they have done in most others but the Confederations Cup delayed Paulinho and Soldado arriving for one reason or another, while injuries have prevented the defence from working together sufficiently and in the last two matches, against Monaco and Espanyol, it showed. Yesterday the long awaited return of Sandro and Kaboul was more than encouraging as we know that they will be major players for the club as they have been in the past.

This time next week we shall be anticipating the first fixture in what we all hope will be a successful campaign, the squad is taking shape even though the possible loss of last seasons star still hangs over the club, it seems as though there is still likely to be many more comings and goings before the transfer window slams shut, so far all promise to be beneficial and improve the team and squad, clearly Steven Caulker must be replaced as the squad is a man down in central defence and Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul have had a fair few injury issues in recent times.

AVB, his coaching staff and the squad have much work to do in the coming week and will still be disrupted by the Internationals ridiculously scheduled for the start of most European leagues season, how many injuries will have to be coped with or long journeys to recover from.

It would be beneficial if Tottenham were able to start the season better than in recent years and not have to play catch up with all the current top four, too often they have several points to claw back after just a few games and it has cost them in each of the last three seasons.
