Tottenham go level with Champions elect Liverpool.

Posted on January 19, 2014 by Scraggs

Tottenham went to Swansea today and after a slow start eventually gained control, turned the screw and won the game quite comfortably. Having now drawn level with one of the teams that many have been tipping to pinch the title, Liverpool, Tottenham have now managed to win five of the six games since AVB was sacked following that home mauling from them, the goal difference has at last been turned into a positive and still some of their best players have to return from injury.

What was so encouraging today was the team selection and the fact that Tim Sherwood has now shown that he is prepared to tear up his preferred blueprint and modify his lineup to suit the opposition and the occasion, a five man midfield and still three goals scored away from home which could have actually ended at double that number. If Sherwood maintains this level of performance and continues to demonstrate that he is prepared to pick teams to suit the occasion then some of those skeptics among us might just have to eat humble pie.

There seemed to be far more cohesion about today’s performance with Christian Eriksen pulling the strings from a more advanced central position while the Swansea central defenders found it virtually impossible to keep track of Adebayor as he dragged them all over the place. Bentaleb and Dempsey look like they might be forming a decent partnership and the five man midfield system certainly seemed to suit them.

Let's hope he can maintain this form until the end of season.

Let’s hope he can maintain this form until the end of season.

While Adebayor was the clear man of the match, close behind were a number pf others including Eriksen, Dembele and Vlad Chiriches who withstood a battering from Swansea’s main man Wilfred Bony, a couple of charges out of defence with the ball glued to his feet lifted the crowd, will he be the one chosen to play alongside Jan Vertonghen when he returns? on current form he would seem to have the edge over Michael Dawson and this run in the steam is certainly a boon to his development.

All in all a good days work, some great interplay and the opposition was carved open time and again with pace and precision, just maybe Tim Sherwood is the one afterall, he has quickly learned the need to change things, he has shown he can motivate the team with a halftime talk or bawling and most importantly of all he seems to be a lucky coach and it has been a good while since we have had one of those.

Probably the best performance yet, enjoyed today.

  2. BigH says:

Credit to Sherwood today, he played a different system to match the opposition. Much needed boost for the players. Will be good to see some of our injured players back. Thought Bentaleb looked class

    • Tony says:

I have not been his biggest fan but enjoyed today’s performance and pleased to see he can up the ante and change the system. he has apparently learned from the arsenal debacle but now it will only get harder as he has more players to choose from OR maybe with better players he will find this job a doddle, for the sake of all Spurs supporters and the club let’s hope for the best case scenario.

  3. JL says:

Great team work throughout.. love the way Eriksen orchestrated the midfield.. he’s turning into a really important player for us.. no doubt Ade scored a brace, but my motm will be Eriksen.. If he can put in performances like this in the long term, then i feel we have truely found a succesor to Modric.. And I still think he should play in the middle and not on the left TS! Haha

    • jazz says:

Some good performances all over and can’t disagree that Eriksen is becoming a major asset. 100% agree no more appearances on the left for him. Also think Lamela will excell in similar role around the striker. Things are looking up.

  4. Jide says:

Great performance all round. Tim Shetwood did surprise me with the tactics. Worked a treat!

  5. top gunner says:

its funny how you talk bad about arsenal buying one player nd you bought 7 rotten potatoes who are all flop110 mills down the drain you were title contenders now you are europa fighters were you belong tinny totts small pub club that what you are adebayor a arsenal reject no your best player

    • Jide says:

Typical Woolwich gooner! Always having a memory lapse! You will end up with nought as usual and start whinning about Wenger.

  6. dan says:

Firstly it’s not £110m down the drain as Levy will get as much or more in return for most of them. As usual you forget that these players have only been here 5 mins how long did you have to wait for Walcott and Ramsey to be half decent and your still waiting on some others. At least we have a realistic chance of winning the Europa, just what is the point of you goons being in a competition you have zero chance of winning, let’s face it if you can’t win the league cup what chance against the best teams.
Can’t wait for the summer and the usual round of moaning about 10 years of being trophyless. gooners talk big but can’t back it up.

  7. Eric says:

    Love the heading
