Tottenham latest for 2014.

Posted on January 01, 2014 by Scraggs

The New Year has only just begun but what have we already learned?

Judging from early reports perhaps the expected arrival of a new left back is not the obvious addition to the squad during this transfer window. There is little doubt that Danny Rose has been a massive loss for more than three months, if he has not yet firmly established his place in the starting lineup then he is surely very close to doing so and it seems that Zeki Fryers might yet be the one to be his back up. Tottenham have for too long had to rely upon Jan Vertonghen to step in and cover for Rose with the result being that our best central defender has been sacrificed. There have been numerous rumours surrounding a replacement for Rose  rather than back up which is really rather surprising. Where once another left back was a possibility Tim Sherwood seems set to put his trust in Fryers if the need arises.

There have been lots of rumours linking Erik Lamela with a loan away from the club, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Milan and Juventus have all been mooted as possible destinations which alone suggests he is a player clubs are prepared to put their faith in. Latest reports have intimated that Tottenham are far from giving up on the player and they have told all his suitors “no deal”, why would they give up on him after just a few months, Tottenham supporters all see plenty with which to work and are willing him to succeed, with almost every game there is improvement and he is endearing himself to the fans with his willingness to work, tackle and battle.

More and more it seems that Jermain Defoe could be off to Toronto and that an an announcement might be imminent but what is not clear is the timing, as we know many plying their trade in the MLS tend to secure loan deals in January and February, Clint Dempsey is the latest but most of us can remember Thierry Henri and David Beckham doing the same in recent seasons, perhaps Defoe will come to some agreement to remain at Tottenham until late February although by taking that route Tottenham face the prospect of being short on numbers going into the final few crucial months of the season.

I would think that the major concern for Tottenham right now is the situation in the centre of defence, with just Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches fit and only Etienne Capoue or possibly Zeki Fryers able to deputise Tottenham might be looking to consolidate if a suitable alternative becomes available. Vertonghen is apparently still two to three weeks away from returning and unfortunately Younes Kaboul has major fitness issues. It is perhaps significant that Kaboul has still not been offered a new contract as he heads into the final six months of his existing one and that tends to suggest that Tottenham’s medical staff have concerns as to whether he will ever regain a decent fitness level.

The only question left to ask is whether in fact Daniel Levy is prepared to back his man in the market when he is after all only on trial until the end of the season, then there is the question as to whether the Head Coach does in fact have any say in transfer matters, it has been implied that Levy and Franco Baldini are the decision makers in that area and the coach simply has to work with what he is given. Just what is the criteria and what is the system with which Tottenham assess targets might be interesting to know and should the style of any potential future coach be taken into consideration?

There had been talk of a Madrid offer for Paulinho but that was probably just malicious papertalk which will now go away with the injury he has suffered, expect the Lamela stories to continue and perhaps some for Vertonghen once he makes his comeback.

he has but then harry had another year left, avb had another 18mths and sherwood only took it on on his terms and earns him a decent payoff if it all goes pear shaped. you know as well as the rest of us that contracts count for nothing in football. unless Sherwood gets top four he’s gone.

  2. lou says:

If he keeps this up we might all be wrong, 4 unbeaten including two difficult away games and he has tightened the defensive side up.

  3. JL says:

I find the Lamela stories amusing.. whoever make these stories obviously don’t know Spurs well enough.. we had Rebrov, Pav, Boateng in recent seasons not performing to expectation but spurs still kept them for a few seasons.. for them to think that levy will give up on Lamela after less than 6 months is simply bemusing.. as for Defow, it seems likely that he will leave in view of this summer’s wc..

    • Tony says:

He only joined us on the 1st September and has been on 3 International call ups since then. He only joined 17 weeks ago and has had to contend with that, find a home, get to know the players and style of a new league, learn English and contend with change of coach!!!! and they say he has been a failure. He is 21 and will possibly become a great yet they still write him off after a matter of a few weeks after investing millions on him. i wouldn’t mind so much if all the talk was of offering big money for him but it’s a loan or swap for of their unwanted ageing has beens.
It certainly looks as though Defoe is off he has not been around the team for a while.
