Tottenham lineup against United.

Posted on January 01, 2014 by Tony

After a decent performance against a depleted Stoke City Tim Sherwood now has to pick a team to go to Old Trafford and try to replicate last seasons result. We know that there will be changes to his last lineup as Kyle Walker will return following suspension and Danny Rose will appear on the other flank after being rested. Unfortunately we will be without Paulinho who suffered from another cowardly Charlie Adams tackle, just what is his problem?

Prior to the Stoke game Tottenham were set set up fast and loose and lacking any defensive midfield cover, fortunately it seems that Sherwood has perhaps realised the error of his ways and chose a much stronger central midfield duo and hopefully he will persist with that again. It seems that United will be without Van Persie and there is also doubt over the fitness of Rooney, if he does play he will become an extra man in midfield and pop up in forward positions whenever the moment presents itself, Sherwood will have to ensure that Tottenham do not find themselves light in numbers in the centre, even without Paulinho he has players to choose from possibly superior to those available to David Moyes, I would back any two of Capoue, Dembele and Eriksen over Cleverley and Carrick. v United

Most would agree that United have always been dangerous from wide areas and the team will be set up to hurt Tottenham in those areas, fortunately our two fullbacks are no slouches and with Aaron Lennon fit to cause Evra his usual worries it only leaves the concern of who to start wide on the left. The choices are Chadli, Sigurdsson, Lamela or Eriksen but to give the latter that floating role again might well be a dangerous option and give the United right side too much room in which to hurt us. Just who he chooses will depend upon whether he retains both Soldado and Adebayor in the side, they have not operated in an orthodox way so far as both have dropped deep to link play at various times.

On this particular occasion it would be extremely encouraging to see Sherwood try something a little different, a five man midfield with Dembele and Eriksen free to get forward and support a lone forward while the wide men do the same whenever possible. Most of us would probably be happy to take a point back to the Lane but this is not a United team to fear as in the past, there is no Fergie and they have won just four league games at home this season, Tottenham have the players to damage them if used correctly especially if Rooney is not considered fit enough to take part.

Over to you Tim, show us you do have the tactical knowledge to bring home a result from the home of the current Champions of the Premiership.

Soldado instead of adevayor for me there is more to his gane and he seems to keep onside. Ade not been as dangerous in the box in last two games

just seen the lineups and fear that rooney might make the extra man in midfield count and also a little concerned that Valencia and smalling might take advantage of Eriksen on the left. hope I’m wrong as all those ahead of us got 3points other than everton. the gap might be too great after today if Sherwood has got this wrong.

it looked like I was right for most of the first half but credit Sherwood he made it work. Warming to him and on to the gooners.
