Tottenham lineup v Hull

Posted on February 01, 2014 by Scraggs

Today it’s off to Hull in the knowledge that we won’t have to face Manchester City and their twelfth man again this season, there is a real chance that the three points might be won provided the team chosen, the tactics and the performance is up to scratch. Hull have slumped in the table and are facing a battle to stay away from the relegation zone, their home form is not responsible for their troubles and so nothing must be taken for granted and a determined effort is a must. Tom Huddlestone will be aiming to put on a real show for the club that let him go in the summer.

Below is the list of players available for this fixture assuming that Moussa Dembele has as usual recovered from his knock, most pleasing are the names returning from injury and in particular Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho who must surely step straight back into the team. Sad to say but City on Wednesday was a step too far for the youngster Bentaleb and he needs a break though it will not be the end for him this season.v hull

Provisional squad: Lloris, Friedel, Archer, Gomes, Walker, Naughton, Dawson, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Rose, Fryers, Dembele, Capoue, Eriksen, Bentaleb, Paulinho, Chadli, Sigurdsson, Lennon, Soldado, Adebayor, Kane, Defoe.

Somehow I believe that Sherwood will fancy his chances in this fixture and might well revert to a 4 4 2 and bring back Soldado who desperately needs to play, perhaps the break from the firing line will finally trigger a goalscoring run as if he can find his form then anything might still be possible this season, he is a far more natural striker than Adebayor and has the potential to fire us to where we want to be.

One of the biggest decisions will be who drops out in central defence with Vertonghen being a certainty to return, both Dawson and Chiriches have done reasonably well and though many admire the battling qualities and bravery of Michael Dawson most recognise that his pace and mobility is often called into question and is a distinct problem against sharp attackers. Kaboul when fit and at his best would be the choice of most experts to partner Vertonghen but it will likely to be the club captain today.

If Sherwood continues with a five man midfield a fluent three in the centre of Dembele, Paulinho and Eriksen with Soldado ahead of them would be our preference but Sherwood is unlikely to, or more like unable to upset Adebayor by leaving him out of the team. With Sandro , Townsend and Lamela soon to return from injury choosing the team for each occasion will just become more difficult.

I will happily print this off and eat my words should things significantly change in the next 60+ minutes – but Lennons complete inability to shoot at goal really does hamstring our side – whereas a player of his worth really should be looking to strike and score far in excess of his actual tally.

One of our most under-performing and highly frustrating players for me.

  2. Boobaspur says:

You pretty much have that team and formation spot on Scraggs, only Bentaleb in for Dembele.

Spurs look terrible up to half time, we have about 2/3rd possession but have done little with it.

Hull easily look sharper and unless they lose their solid concentration in the 2nd half, it’s an impressive looking and new Hull signing Long that looks more likely to score again.

Let’s hope Spurs can seriously up their game in the next 45.

    • Tony says:

Will somebody please tell me what Bentaleb brings to the table, decent player ,comfortable on the ball but then so is Livermore. Bentaleb stays yet a player with a bit of vision like Holtby is sent on loan!

  3. Boobaspur says:

An utterly dismal performance from so many on that team today anyone would think AVB was back at the helm.

Well, anyone who previously wanted him out for playing such disappointing football. It’s all too easy blame the man in charge, but really, it’s the players who need to take responsibility.

I thought Hull deserve praise for their well won share of the points today, but Spurs really didn’t show any sign of getting going until after half-time.

Too many players today looked hapless at times, including, Lennon, Walker, Soldado, along with a practical no show performance from Paulinho who did get the equaliser, but did little else. Lloris looked foolish too often today also.

Once again my least favourite Spurs player, Adebayor who didn’t achieve a whole lot himself, put in the most effort in my opinion, but coming so deep for the ball today just shows how dire our play was.

I’m loathe to have a go at young Bentaleb, but after a few solid performances, he is starting to look a little ordinary again.

Well done to Shane Long, he had Dawson in a tissy for much of the game.

  4. Jide says:

It should not take mere mortals like us supporters to show that Bentaleb is tired and needs to be taken out of the line of fire. In my view, Sherwood, unfortunately is not going to do that because he is trying to prove a point that he has been able to bring in the youth and no signings was necessary.

This will harm the team in the long run. This season is just going to fizzle out with nothing achieved. I do not see most of out best players staying next season if we are not in the CL and Sherwood remains as our manager.

We have wasted resources and a season that promised so much. That is what hurts the most.
