Tottenham midfield is up to the challenge.

Southern softies, no fight, soft underbelly, how many times has the Tottenham team and in particular their midfield been referred to in such a way? Well no longer, AVB has not just one midfielder prepared to fight and battle but a squad full of players prepared to give their all for the cause.

Last night Tottenham faced Tromso in the first group game of the UEFA Cup and in all fairness it was no contest, irrespective of the ease with which Tottenham managed to overcome the opposition there were still some performances that lit up the night and moments of great quality. Moussa Dembele and Sandro were absolutely immense in the centre of the park and simply bullied Tromso out of possession, it really did look like men against boys. the power, strength and sheer quality of the two of them was exceptional and was reminiscent of their early partnership of last season.

They shall not pass.

They shall not pass.

Dembele picked up a knock but what looked serious fortunately turned into a relatively minor incident. Sandro is apparently still searching for full fitness after recovering from serious injury and you can only wonder how good he will be soon. With Paulinho and Capoue not so much in reserve but equally as impressive Tottenham are spoilt for choice.

Sigurdsson, Holtby, Lamela and Eriksen also took a full part in last nights endeavours, all work etxremely hard and are up for any challenge, Sigurdsson didn’t quite have the impact that he had against Norwich but gave his all and was a constant threat, Holtby is still easing himself back from a preseason disrupted by injury, there was the odd mistake and sloppy pass but he did not stop working and set up Defoe for his second goal with a perfectly weighted pass in behind the Tromso defence. Lamela is another who works hard but who also possesses a threat, not the stand out performance hoped for perhaps but an assist for the first goal and some very impressive moments. his forward passes always seem to offer a threat of opening up the opposition and he makes some superb runs beyond the defence. No fear that he will become a star at the Lane.

There is little need to mention the impact and effort that Townsend has put in this season or that Lennon and Chadli also have the same effect when fit, which just leaves

Norwich couldn't stop Christian Eriksen.

Norwich couldn’t stop Christian Eriksen.

Christian Eriksen to enthuse over, what an immediate impact he has had. On Saturday he ran the show against Norwich and last night after coming on near to the end he scored a stunning goal.

Last season Tottenham were accused of being a one man team, it was unfair to do so then and is an accusation that will no longer be levelled at them, no matter which system AVB decides upon he has the players to follow his instructions to the letter, better still he has top quality back up in every position. Rotation and permutation is now the name of the game with no drop in quality.
