Tottenham starting lineup against Stoke.

Posted on May 10, 2013 by Scraggs

At this stage of the season there is no room for error, it must be 3 points or Tottenham will definitely fall short in their pursuit of Champions League football. On the plus side it appears that AVB will have most of his squad available including Lennon and Dembele following injury, the negative side is that Tottenham visit a Stoke team that has recovered it’s form just in time to save themselves from a real relegation battle.

Stoke away has often been the nightmare scenario that some of the biggest teams have faced in the past, some have prevailed some have not and their hopes for the season have been laid bare by a team prepared to stand toe to toe and fight for any scraps. As well as being a scrapper of a team they also possess some outstanding footballers and are capable of playing some good stuff. They have a big lump up front who will cause some problems, his name Peter Crouch, Palacios and Etherington are also ex-players who will wish to prove a point if chosen.

AVB must get this one right as to fail to put pressure on Arsenal with a win would be criminal in the context of what is at stake here. Tottenham finished the stronger of the two sides in their last fixture against Chelsea but still missed the strength and pace of Moussa Dembele who will be essential for this fixture. AVB will have a couple of difficult decisions to make particularly relating to Aaron Lennon and Assou-Ekotto, there will obviously be issues regarding fitness and form that only those close to the squad will be aware of but based upon last known form and the information relayed by the press this is the team to bring the 3 points back to the Lane and prolong the chase for glory.

Keeper is a no brainer Hugo Lloris every time. Tottenham will need a strong back four as they will have to face an aerial bombardment as always against Stoke, they will need to face up to that in the centre of defence and attempt to cut out crosses into the box, for this particular fixture Walker and Dawson pick themseves but alongside Dawson Steven Caulker should start and revert Jan Vertonghen to left-back.  Adebayor is a certain starter up front especially following that outstanding performance on Wednesday, anything close to that again would be most welcome, behind him Dembele, Parker and Huddlestone with Bale on the right and Sigurdsson on the left.

Souness and Hoddle can say what they like but with a bench consisting of Defoe, Dempsey, Holtby,  Ekotto, Lennon, Carrol  and Friedel Tottenham have plenty of quality to fall back on with no room for Naughton, Livermore and Gallas and with first choice pair Kaboul and Sandro injured. Even QPR and Sunderland’s star players this season have been young Tottenham players Townsend and Rose.

Anyway, that would be the team I would choose to do the job with plenty of options on the bench to change things or see the result through.

Think I might be tempted to give Sigi a run as one of the centre 3 and alternate Lennon and Bale on either wing at the expense of Huddlestone/

  2. Grant says:

Parker, Holtby and Dembele should swamp their midfield with workrate and ability, think I would leave Dawson and Vertonghen and bring in Naughton for Benoit. Cannot wait to get Danny Rose back.

  3. i support Tottenham to win this important match to achieve big four..

  4. tom says:

Half-time at Villa Park and it is still all to play for.
