Tottenham Still in Hunt for Brazilian Striker

Posted on May 01, 2013 by Tony

Internacional striker Leandro Damiao has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur for the best part of the last two years. They were in the hunt for the striker when Harry Redknapp was in charge and continued with higher bids when Andre Villas Boas took charge last summer. The transfer has fallen through several times because of trouble with the asking price and contract negotiations but it finally seems the whole affair is done with and he is preparing to move to North London as soon as the transfer window opens.

He has been a flight away from White Hart Lane in the last transfer window but now the move is as close as ever. Internacional club president Giovanni Luigi has told the press in Brazil “Leandro is very likely to play games in England in the coming year. On the other hand we can exclude Napoli from a deal”. The club has blocked negotiations with Italian club Napoli after they tried to negotiate terms with the player and his agent before any deal was agreed between the two clubs.

Napoli have been desperately trying to search for a replacement for outgoing striker Edison Cavani who is going to attract bids from the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Juventus and many other top European clubs. It is thought that Napoli initially won the race to sign the striker as they would have tabled a better offer than Spurs but the deal was cut short because of the secretive negotiation attempts from the club.

Damiao could be a key player along with one or two other transfers for Tottenham. If they manage to hold on to Gareth Bale and bring in new players, it could be a season of change for the Lilywhites as they look to challenge the Manchester clubs for a top spot in the league.
