Tottenham team analysis.

Last nights performance was good and keeps hope alive that a top four finish will be achieved and if so probably at the expense of Arsenal. There were periods of the game, particularly in the first half, when it appeared that Chelsea might take control, in reality Hugo Lloris was rarely called upon to make a save and both Chelsea goals should have been prevented.

The outstanding performance on the night was from Adebayor who finally proved just how good he can be, he scored a great goal and one most thought was beyond his capabilities and the Chelsea defence found him impossible to handle all night. It really was a complete centre forwards performance, he held up play, attacked their last line, created openings and chances for Huddlestone, Bale, Walker, Dempsey and Sigurdsson. Not once did he hide and it really was a powerful performance which showed the very best of his attributes.

The back four and in particular Jan Vertonghen did reasonably well against a very fluid midfield, Michael Dawson was his usual self prepared to throw himself in front of anything and Kyle Walker up against Chelsea’s most effective player on the night Eden Hazard did well even finding time to run at the Chelsea back line time and again. The disappointment on the night was of course Assou-Ekotto who seemed unable to see danger, track or cover at times and his passing in the main was poor. Benni has proven to be one of the best fullbacks around over the past few seasons but is really struggling at the moment, there was a significant improvement once Sigurdsson came on and held his position, just being there to receive the ball early from Benni improved the whole shape and ultimately the equaliser in which Benni was one of the architects.

Holtby and Parker covered acres of ground and worked hard, Huddlestone had plenty of the ball and kept things ticking along without doing anything outstanding but there were to many moments when was caught on the ball in central midfield allowing Chelsea to counter attack.

Aaron Lennon is no where near fit and contributed little other than in preventing Ashley Cole joining in their attack. Gareth Bale had the odd moment but just being there is enough to allow room for his teammates and he had one or two good moments. JTN’s article yesterday written by “Scraggs” ┬ánamed the team to get the result needed and it was noticeable that the team that finished so strongly was exactly that suggested once Bale went to the right, Siggi came onto the left and Dempsey replaced Holtby centrally. Well done Scraggs a good call perhaps AVB read the article!

The hope is that Dembele regains fitness to take his place in the centre for the remaining fixtures and if Lennon can reach a better level so much the better, failing that the team that finished seems to have the right balance but the temptation might be to bring in Caulker and switch Vertonghen to left back to see us through.
