Tottenham team lineup v Everton.

Posted on February 09, 2014 by Scraggs

Hopefully Sherwood will have realised by now that though a few other clubs might have a couple of better players to choose from if he gets his tactics right a result against anybody is possible. Less than a week ago he put out a team to face City and quite frankly for half an hour the opposition made chance after chance and should have been out of sight, thereafter the officials conspired to deny Tottenham any chance of getting a result. After the game he talked of City as being the best team in the world, champions elect and virtually unbeatable, since then Chelsea have put them firmly in their place with a 1-0 win at the Etihad, a result which was far more comfortable than the scoreline actually suggests, then yesterday lowly Norwich, who had been humiliated 7-0 in the corresponding fixture, held them to a goalless draw and had a couple of late chances to win it. BOTH teams used defensive midfielders and just the one up front.

There are occasions when two forwards will bring results though in my opinion today’s fixture against high flying Everton is not one of them, against the very best teams it is a gamble to leave yourself exposed to an extra man in midfield, it leaves your central defence exposed to quick raiders and let’s be honest Dawson and Vertonghen are no speedsters themselves and less able to cope with pace, chances are offered up to the opposition unnecessarily and it is difficult to dominate games.

As this is a game that Tottenham need to win to keep up the challenge with both clubs from Liverpool Sherwood will probably need to rely upon the all round abilities and cohesion of Paulinho and Dembele, the last occasion that they played together was in a fine performance against Stoke, on that occasion they managed to combine offensive and defensive duties very effectively but then the more creative Eriksen  was free to work across the pitch from a position on the left. The return of Townsend coupled with the quality of Everton should mean that Eriksen will be free to roam but from a more central position closer to his centre forward as was the case in the fixture against Swansea.

It’s now time for Bentaleb to become a squad player to be called upon when needed, he has had a good run and proven that he is a potential star of the future if handled correctly, now and for the remainder of the season it should be about big players, experienced players, players that know how to handle pressure and compete against the best.

We are not quite at the must win stage but we are getting close to that point, home games especially against teams with the same ambitions must now become wins as we still have to travel to Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle, they will be difficult enough and the pressure will be intense just knowing that a draw might do, imagine having to go into those games needing to win! We have had to travel to City and Chelsea in recent seasons needing three points and failed.

Somehow I expect Sherwood to stick to his preference and play Adebayor and Soldado leaving Townsend on the bench, if he does I sincerely hope he is proven right and we win the game though I do believe that by doing so he will seriously have underestimated the ability of Everton. Today we are showing the expected lineup AND what we would actually like to see and a realistic possibility.
