Tottenham team selection surprise for Arsenal.

Posted on January 03, 2014 by Random Spurs Supporter

It’s a game that we all want to win because it pitches Tottenham against their neighbours Arsenal and is the opportunity to further boost moral as we chase that elusive Champions League place. Tim Sherwood has done remarkably well given what was perceived as naivety in his first few games in charge, he has changed a few things and the team has become far more difficult to beat ¬†and less open. Tomorrow he will have to face an Arsenal team that we are told is severely short on numbers, Wenger has suggested that Ozil and Giroud are unlikely to start the game but then we have been here before, only New Years Day Wayne Rooney was ¬†unlikely to appear and yet miraculously managed to play the entire game.

The Spurs team that recently started at Old Trafford all seem to be fit for selection but then we have today been informed that Jermain Defoe , Lewis Holtby and Andros Townsend returned to training and are all also available for selection. How Arsenal set up will be 4 5 1 or 4 3 3 and even though they will have a couple of players sidelined through injury they will not be short on quality, nor will they need to adjust their tactics. With this in mind will Sherwood choose a team to take the game to Arsenal or set the team up to match the opposition, the answer is probably a bit of both.

v arsenalBecause this is a cup game and lower down on our list of priorities some changes might be expected, that might be the case but nothing like the six or seven that we had come to expect because of the number of injuries that have to be dealt with. i think sherwood might just spring at least one surprise on Wenger by injecting more pace into the team and especially down our left to combat Walcott and Sagna, my guess is that he will introduce Andros Townsend on the left in place of Christian Eriksen, he will give far more protection to Danny Rose and will replicate the pace and danger provided on our right flank with Walker and Lennon. The only question then is whether he will choose the the guile of the rejuvenated Eriksen in the centre alongside Dembele or retain the more defensively effective Capoue against a fluid opposition midfield?

With a week before our next game and players starting to recover from injury Sherwood has no need to hold back and will go for it, as a result this is what we expect the starting eleven to look like.
