Tottenham team to bring home the 3 points.

Posted on May 08, 2013 by Scraggs

Tonight is the night when Tottenham retain control of their destiny or must rely upon the help of others to remain in contention for a top four position. In my opinion AVB has occasionally chosen the wrong starting lineup but has managed to address the situation with shrewd substitutions and tactical alterations. Facing a team with the attacking intent and ability of Chelsea leaves him in a dangerous position as if the team is set up wrongly then the result might be beyond the team by half-time.

Against City and Southampton Gareth Bale was started from a central positition before switching and eventually finding some room to score the winner coming in from the wing, by comparison Clint Dempsey started out wide and as his natural game is centrally he drifted in and congested areas and so stifled the game. In order for Tottenham to get the desired result it is essential that the team is able to compete with the strength and ability of the Chelsea midfield both through the middle and from the flanks where both fullbacks will bomb on if given the chance.

Of course much will depend on the fitness of some important squad members but assuming the provisional squad put forward by AVB are truly in contention this is the team that could compete for the 3 points in this important fixture.

The keeper and back four surely picks itself, even though Benoit Assou-Ekotto has not had the best of seasons every leftback has had to perform without a recognised left sided midfielder ahead of them as Gareth Bale has been given a free role, so it is Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen and Benni as the preferred defensive players.

For me the midfield must be chosen to compete with that of Chelsea and to assist their defenders as well as support a lone striker, Gareth Bale has been considered a left midfielder over the past couple of seasons as he has caught the imagination of the football world in that role, he built up a great understanding with Benni, scored a few goals and created many chances. This season things have changed in relation to his role in the team and whilst he must not be stifled because he has become the biggest threat to any defence and a great goalscorer, for this fixture he might just have to play a slightly more settled role.

Without a shadow of doubt tonight is a night for Adebayor as the lone striker simply because he is far more capable of holding on to the ball allowing midfielders to get up in support, he is also adept at creating space for the supporting midfielders to exploit.

In central midfield I would plump for the industry, pace and power of Scott Parker, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, all three can tackle, and pass as well as support the forward and all are entirely comfortable and specialise in that position. Surprisingly maybe on the rght it might be preferable for Gareth Bale to start and play a more rigid role with only the occasional switch to confuse the Chelsea defence, because of the amazing speed of Kyle Walker as an attacking twosome they could prove decisive as well as being more than capable of suppressing any attacks down that flank. The fixtures against City and Southampton only went the way of Tottenham when Bale operated from the right, an area Gary Speed preferred for him playing for the Welsh team. Over on the left Gylfi Sigurdsson seems to be the most comfortable and effective, he plays to team orders and helps his fullback and also offers a threat when cutting in to shoot with his right foot.

Hopefully if all are fit that starting lineup would provide AVB with a possible game changing bench with the likes of  Holtby, Huddlestone, Carroll and the speedsters of Defoe and Lennon as other options.

Whatever the result the final outcome to the season will not be over and there will still remain a chance of achieving a top four position with the help of teams fighting relegation, from a supporters point of view my hope is that Tottenham really go for it and put in a great performance and trust that poor referring decisions have no bearing on the result as has so often been the case in crucial fixtures.

Looks like it will have to be Holtby for Dembele unless AVB and Tottenham are trying to outfox Benitez.
