Tottenham to target League title if no Champions League football.

Posted on May 13, 2013 by Random Spurs Supporter

Perhaps we are all looking at involvement in the Champions League next season as the be all and end all of of the club’s expectations and the only measure of success. It would bring an eneormous amount of extra revenue and that would enable the club to be bolder in the transfer market but perhaps we are all missing a trick even if it only for next season.

Let us forget that Manchester United have won the league comfortably this season and assume that things will return to a little more normality with the changes now in place, United continuously rode their luck this season and have never really dominated as much as their lead actually suggests, most pundits have frequently said that they have been vulnerable and that RVP and his goals have made the difference. As things stand Tottenham are just 6 points behind last years champions Manchester City and are still breathing down the neck of that other fantastically wealthy club Chelsea. Had AVB not had to contend with so many upheavals and late additions to the squad when he took over it is fair to say that Tottenham might comfortably have several more points, poor performances against Newcastle, WBA and Norwich ended with just 2 points, the return fixtures, with 2 away from home, have resulted in 9 points.

For the best part of this season and particularly the past couple of months the suggestion has been that because of involvement in the Europa Cup competition Tottenham have lost their edge and have suffered from exhaustion, if this is so then perhaps just for next season a lack of participation in the Champions League proper which would be even more exhausting would be no bad thing, play the squad or youngsters in the Europa and devote all playing resources to winning the title.

At the end of January last season Tottenham were true challengers to both Manchester clubs and they have remained in the pack this entire season, especially once AVB had found his feet, bring in a few important elements, we all know where improvements can be made, promote more youngsters for cups and chuck the lot at real success, Tottenham are very close to becoming real challengers and if the worst happens and Arsenal win both games use the failure and disappointment in a positive way and go for the trophy that Tottenham have been striving for since 1961, the League Title. It is no longer so far fetched now that Tottenham have begun to beat the best teams on a regular basis, this is not an ageing team the opposite in fact, only William Gallas and Brad Friedel are close to retirement and the only others in their early 30’s are Defoe and Parker. Beyond those players this is a young team growing in confidence, ability and experience which is clear from the ever increasing number of points won each season.

Every Tottenham supporter, player and employee of the club wants involvement in the Champions League next season as it will be a sign of improvement and more significantly mean that it has been at the expense of Arsenal, the one team that must always be beaten given the choice. That situation will not and must not change but if the worst happens it must be turned in the clubs favour and focus and resource must be on finally winning the most prestigious of the lot, the League Title.

The squad isn’t good enough to challenge, it doesn’t have enough depth. We didn’t play badly against Newcastle in the first game we gave away a silly penalty and a poor defensive header led to their goals.

We have rode our own luck this season and a long term injury to Bale next season would be very damaging.

We need to buy a left-back, a defensive central midfielder, a playmaker, 2 strikers and a back up wide man who can also play in a front three.

The point is that AVB will improve the squad this summer. they have come close without those players so imagine what he can achieve with them. He now has a new left back with Danny Rose returning and backup on the wing with Townsend. Don’t agree that another defensive midfielder is needed with Sandro due to return, agree that a top notch playmaker is needed as Tom Carroll needs more time. Kaboul will return to improve the defence.
2 strikers and a playmaker is what is needed. It is likely that Tottenham will finish with 72 points their best ever return and with some investment is another dozen points well within their grasp.
Tottenham lost 3 world class players before the season really started so to knock the squad is crazy, Had any or both strikers even grabbed 15 more goals between them things would be much different now.

    Tottenham just suck
