Tottenham transformation continues in earnest.

Posted on August 14, 2013 by Tony

Hardly a day goes by without Tottenham being linked in numerous ways with transfers in and out and there is no sign of a let up as Daniel Levy, Franco Baldini and the coaches go about creating the most powerful squad possible with the funds available and within the wage limitations imposed.

Today it seems that Scott Parker might be on his way to either QPR or Fulham who have now registered late interest, while Tom Huddlestone seems set for Hull if Sunderland fail to resurrect their previous intention to lure him to the North East. In many ways it will be sad to see them both leave, Parker only joined in 2011 although it seems he has been with Tottenham far longer than two years but he was a vital ingredient to the midfield in his first season helping the club to fourth place. Huddlestone seems to have been around for ever and it is with regret for many Tottenham supporters that he never managed to make a midfield spot his own. He did threaten to finally nail down a  place in the team in the season when Tottenham displaced Liverpool for fourth, he and Modric were imperious in that difficult run in and in the wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and City. Injury and fitness concerns always seemed to stall his progression even though his ability to pick a pass was never ever doubted.

Another outgoing seems to be Jake Livermore who may well follow Huddlestone to Hull , Tottenham have still not given up on Livermore as his is only a loan spell, how he fares might well have a bearing on whether he gets another chance at Tottenham or leads to his sale.

If there are likely to be outgoings then obviously there must be more incomings and today it seems that there is strong interest  and negotiation in relation to Erik Lamela from Roma for a very substantial sum purported to be in the region of £30m including add ons. He is a forward with enormous potential and could become a real superstar in his own right in a couple more years, he would likely form part of of a very formidable front three alongside Soldado and any one of Bale, Chadli and Lennon. The other player strongly linked, yet again, is another Belgian from Ajax Toby Alderweireld, with only a year left on his contract he will become another defensive option able to play centrally or at fullback.

It certainly seems certain that there is still much to do this month as the number of squad players will be well short of the twenty-five needed if these sales do occur, my concern is that Tottenham might be trying to do to much to soon, last season was no failure even though the team fell just short, most of us would have been more than satisfied with just the additions of Soldado, Paulinho and Chadli. The average age of the squad has been reduced dramatically, more players with pace have been added and every new addition so far has an extremely good record when it comes to goalscoring, there seems no doubt that the accusation levelled at Tottenham of being a one man team will now cease.
