Tottenham welcome Eric Dier.

Posted on August 01, 2014 by Guest Writer

This seems like a deal that has taken a year to come to fruition as last summer Tottenham were linked with the player, apparently at the time Sporting were insistent on retaining a huge sell on clause but the players continued insistence on refusing to sign a new contract left the door open for Daniel Levy and he charged through.

Dier is not yet the finished product though he  has been carefully groomed, he has appeared in the first team on 30 occasions over 2 seasons and is still only 20 years of age.He is adept at playing on the right of central defence, rightback or even as a defensive midfielder though there is little doubt that he has been brought in as the successor to Dawson and Kaboul sooner rather than later. Bearing in mind that we were first linked with him a year ago this signing is probably the work of Baldini and a welcome addition.

Dier along with Velkjovic, now also being slowly introduced  by Pochettino, have a combined age of just 38 and along with Vertonghen, Chiriches, if he stays, and Zeki Fryers  now likely to specialise in the centre rather than at left back, will ensure that Tottenham remain enormously strong in central defence for years to come.

Quietly and efficiently Tottenham have gone about reinforcing their options at the back, even the signing of Danny Rose to a new 5 year contract should be taken as a massive positive, he is still only 24 and only a recent convert to the position having always been considered a winger/midfielder, that means he is still learning and will continue to do so and once he does then Tottenham will have another excellent player with pace and energy to run all day.

If Tottenham can now pull off the Schneiderlin and Rodriguez deals that will probably be it except for a few sales and loans to trim the squad to a manageable size. Already it seems that Tom Carroll is heading to Derby to continue his development, that should ensure another season in a good team battling for promotion like his last period QPR, Pritchard is clearly doing well and already knocking in the goals while Falque seems to have secured a long term deal at Genoa and we have received a fee of £4m for him, we wish all of them every success.

So far after all this wheeling and dealing Tottenham remain £4.5m to the good and still have the £6m following the sale of Defoe in the kitty, add the £50m of extra TV revenue and it is not unreasonable to expect a marquee signing or two yet.
