Tottenham Youth coaching system as good as any.

Posted on May 04, 2013 by Guest Writer

West Ham, Arsenal and United amongst others are all quick to knock the youth system at Tottenham pointing out that Ledley King is the only player to have made it into the team in recent years, many seem to have forgotten the likes of Campbell, Dawson, Lennon, Huddlestone, Bale, Caulker, Rose, Walker, Carroll, Townsend and a number of others. Yes Tottenham did purchase some of these players at a later stage of their development but none were the finished article and their schooling continued for some time before they eventually became first team squad regulars.

Every club has had an immense turnover of young players and in truth only a small percentage ever make it through to achieve first team football in the Premier League, it has all but dried up at West Ham, Chelsea have a terrible track record so far, United are one of the best examples still and of course this era under Alex Ferguson started with a great bunch coming through, perhaps it might be an opportune time to mention that David Beckham was a schoolboy at Tottenham before going to United.

Arsenal are credited with having had one of the best systems under Arsene Wenger but in truth apart from Jack Wilshere most of their previous successes have been brought in from other clubs in the same way as Tottenham including Fabregas, Nasri, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey and Jenkinson.

Manchester City are spending a fortune developing their youth system, in the meantime the likes of Southampton and Crewe continue to churn out good players for their first teams, just imagine how good a team Southampton might have had in a couple of years had they been able to keep all of their youth players.

Tottenham have just won the new U21 Premier League and are performing well at all age levels, that in itself means nothing but it does suggest that talent is being identified and is then receiving excellent coaching, the club have many players out on loan at all ages and levels of performance including the Premier League, Danny Rose and Andros Townsend are both receiving rave reviews as did Kyle Walker , Steven Caulker and Kyle Naughton before them, before returning to the club and first team squad.

Several of the younger players are well known to Tottenham supporters already and much is expected of many of them, apart from those previously mentioned Tom Carroll, Pritchard, Coulthirst, Coulibaly, Fryers, Adam Smith, Ceballos and Harry Kane are all potentially first team squad members.

Currently Tottenham are up there with the best of them when it comes to player development, Steven Caulker is already an England centre half and goalscorerer following in the footsteps of Ledley King and Sol Campbell, it might prove almost impossible to bring through another even close to Hoddle but there are signs of some decent midfielders already, fullbacks have never been a problem over the years with Perryman, Hughton, Kinnear, Carr, Beal, and Walker being the pick of the bunch.

Obviously Tottenham have been able to develop one or two wingmen/midfielders these days in Lennon, Bale and Townsend for example. Although Gareth Bale has now adapted his game still further and has become a prolific goalscorer this season, top quality forwards have not yet come through the system to my memory, Mark Falco , Terry Gibson, Derek Possee and Keith Weller came through many years ago, Peter Crouch was a youth player but released.

Every club must be looking for exceptional forwards and goalscorers, they cost the big bucks and are at a premium, Tottenham believe that Harry Kane and Shaquille Coulhirst have the potential to come good although both are still only teenagers, Harry Kane has had a couple of loan spells out in the Championship with great success but was hampered by injury when loaned to Norwich in the Premier League at the beginning of the season.

The sheer numbers and how youths develop in the game dictate that only a special few will make it through, because of the standards set by the club who wish to become one of the best in Europe again, many will move on but because of the exceptional facilities and coaching provided by Tottenham they will improve considerably as players and perform at a high level.
