Tottenham’s list of targets gets even longer.

Posted on June 16, 2013 by Tony

As the transfer window proper gets ever closer so the number of players linked to Tottenham increases daily, there remain some old favourites from transfer windows past like Damiao and Afellay neither of whom are likely to actually show up at Tottenham next season. Damiao, if he was ever a real target, has had his chance whereas Afellay has been nothing short of disappointing from the day he joined Barcelona even when he was occasionally fit to play.

Forwards and midfielders galore are being mentioned such as Benteke, Aubameyang , Villa, Lamela, Ince, McCarthy, Chadli, Paulinho, Bernard, Guarin and Soldado, whilst Negredo and Jackson Martinez seem to have dropped off the agenda for the time being. It is likely that some of these players are potential targets and most Tottenham supporters would hope and expect to see a couple arrive in the next few weeks.

One of the Spanish duo of Soldado or Negredo would seem to be the most affordable and both are proficient goalscorers, there might well be a preference for Benteke or Martinez but both would be very expensive and both would also represent more of a gamble. I really don’t see AVB moving out Adebayor as he is a team player and with a decent preseason is likely to be a huge success once again, he is also an unselfish worker for the team no matter what others might think.

Another central midfielder and another wide player will be brought in to challenge Lennon and hopefully offer more of a goal threat, at the moment Paulinho and Fredy Guarin seem to be strong favourites for the midfield role but once Baldini has been appointed the Pjanic connection might return.

This promises to be a strange but exciting transfer window as the current squad is not far off the top positions, they will undoubtedly improve simply because as a squad they have gelled over the course of last season when there were some young and some inexperienced performers, all the same there is huge ambition surrounding the club, coaches and players and improvements will be made and decent money spent to bring in more quality.

So far only City have spent any money and to be honest neither of the 2 players strike me as superior to what Tottenham already have, a couple of players that might have made a big difference have already gone to Monaco and the Napoli striker Cavani seems set to favour the easy life in Spain. Lewandowski is probably the only other striker that might make a massive difference to a Premiership club and he wants to go to Bayern and might be willing to stay where he is for another year to achieve that.

For a couple of weeks it is likely to be just speculation but once the Confederation Cup is over and the window opens for the Premiership on the 1st July things should start to fall into place, the players return to the club to prepare for next season on the 8th July and a new teammate or 2 might already be in place to meet up by then.

What must be worrying for Arsenal is that they all preferred Spurs over them. Spurs wanted Arshavin but luckily Arsenal beat them to that one.

Adebayor couldn’t wait to leave and the other three all chose Spurs. What does that tell you? Arsenal are in decline and Spurs are the team on the move.

Interesting that Arsenal hoping for 3 or 4 which is the best that they might hope for, Tottenham meanwhile aiming higher still, 2 or 3 right new players and will believe they will win it.
Just read that Andy Carroll turned down Arsenal, that must hurt.
