Tottenham’s magnificent 7:5th up Vlad Chiriches.(video)

It was a battle, it took longer than expected and probably cost a million or two more than anticipated but eventually Vlad Chiriches managed to secure his transfer to Tottenham and the replacement for Steven Caulker finally arrived. At last AVB had his four central defenders, the optimum number he requested for his squad.

Chiriches is the least known of all the Tottenham purchases this summer, along with Chadli, but he is one of the players that might prove to be one of the most exciting. Nobody other than scouts and his previous opponents will know very much about him but since Tottenham began to show interest all the talk about him from fellow professionals has been very encouraging. Chelsea obviously know something of his ability as he scored against them in the Champions League last season helping to knock them out of the tournament.

From what has been seen and said of this player it does appear that he is capable of playing in either centre back role as he is two footed, perhaps even left back if called for, he is quick and very comfortable on the ball and much like Jan Vertonghen does like to break from defence and go on the offensive.

Chiriches seems the type of player that completely suits AVB and his ideals, able to play the highline defensive strategy that AVB prefers because of his pace and his tremendous reading of the game which enables him to make an enormous number of interceptions so cutting out danger before it begins.

Chiriches and his defensive position within the team would rarely whet the appetite of supporters but take a look at this video of some of his best work and you will see a good defender and one with exciting attacking tendencies, still young and adventurous and so there will always be a silly error in his tank but from what I have seen and read many more plusses than negatives. Some of his play is reminiscent of a box to box midfielder rather than a central defender and if he brings just some of that excitement to Tottenham he will soon become a fans favourite.
