Tottenham’s season rests on winning today. No excuses.

Today represents the defining moment in Tottenham’s season and last chance saloon in the chase for that elusive fourth place. Having watched Wigan against Manchester City in their triumphant FA Cup fixture yesterday it is clear that their next fixture against Arsenal is not now the foregone conclusion expected.

Yesterday the script was expected to be a fairly straightforward win for City, some sort of result for Aston Villa ensuring their Premiership safety leaving Wigan demoralised and facing a difficult task recovering in time to go for the three points essential to their survival. As things turned out Wigan not only won the FA Cup but were the better team for most of the game and deserved victory, they now face what still remains a difficult fixture but they go into it on an extreme high and knowing that should they be victorious their final fixture at home to Villa becomes a shootout for survival.

We have been here before, last season the opportunity arose to take control of 3rd place with an away fixture at lowly Villa, Tottenham controlled most of the game but failed to hit the target and the game petered out to a goalless draw, today the opportunity arises to win and take back fourth position piling pressure on Arsenal for the Wigan game.

There is every chance that Arsenal might slip up in one of their two remaining fixtures but if Tottenham fail to win today it would require that they slip up in both games, that rarely happens with the top clubs and if Tottenham wish to be considered as true Champions League contenders then they must start by winning a difficult fixture at Stoke. A few years back Tottenham succeeded in winning at Manchester City which ensured 4th place, that proved that the team was worthy and today they must do the same.

Today Tottenham must standup to the challenge and at least give themselves the best possible chance of overhauling their neighbours, of course if Arsenal do win both of their remaining fixtures they will take that 4th spot and will have deserved to, Tottenham lost the initiative themselves by throwing away a point or three at Liverpool,by defeat at home to Fulham and because they failed to beat Everton, Wigan and Chelsea . Much as it pains to say Arsenal and Chelsea have overcome all their challenges and taken the points to get where they are, today Tottenham must do all they can and win at Stoke, failure to do so will relieve enormous pressure on the Arsenal team and they will relax their way to 4th spot.
